Wheeler High School Reviews
Rating 3.93 out of 5 551 reviews
Looking back, I had an overall pretty alright experience. I made friends, I did all the high school things, and I made it out alive. I had a unique experience with being a part of the magnet program so my academic classes and teachers may have been more advanced and experiences and I haven’t heard or experienced all positive things with the gen pop teachers. I wouldn’t recommend magnet, it’s a bit of a competitive and toxic experience. If a college acceptance and preparedness boost is worth that to you than go for it! I can say that everyone in magnet that I know got into either UGA or GT. When it comes to safety, I’d say that overall there is a good police presence but a lot of things happen daily that could threaten safety. Fights, drug use, and confrontation occur frequently. If you want to use the bathroom without getting hit with a certain smell, maybe go somewhere else. With the arts, we have really great programs and I’ve only heard good things. Same with sports.
Wheeler High school is a relatively decent school all things considered. Our school does however, have a magnet program specializing in STEAM which steals the limelight from the rest of the school. Most parents that are involved, are involved in magnet, therefore most of our money that is raised is for them, because they are who raises it. They have a nicer building, better opportunities, even better teachers. We have other programs such as AVID but without a correct or fair budget, we cannot have access to the same amount of opportunities as magnet kids. Wheeler also has many admin but they seem to be concerned about the wrong things, focusing on tardies instead of real threats the school faces weekly. Our counselors are resourceful and our school offers an incredible program called dual enrollment which can change the lives of some students, that is highly advertised across the school.
Wheeler High School is a great small school. It has a very close-knit environment. Many of the teachers are very willing to assist students in need. Currently, the administration is undergoing staff cuts for budget purposes, however. This means that many of the elective honors classes are being removed from the school. This also removes a few options for types of diplomas that you can receive. As this could be deemed understandable from the perspective of budget, there are a few positions within staff that could be eliminated for the sake of keeping teachers. Additionally, there is more than plenty of money saved up within our "rainy day" account to hold on to these teachers, the members of staff directly responsible for the education within the school. I believe these administrative decisions will reduce the efficiency and education quality within our school.
