Student records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. This act, known as FERPA, restricts student records from public access. FERPA permits the release of "directory information" without seeking written permission from the student. Examples of directory information include photographs, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, published yearbooks etc. (For complete list, ask reference archivist.) Students, their parents, and designated education officials performing official duties are permitted access to a student's records beyond directory information. Under MCL 399.810(4), student records at the Archives of Michigan that are more than 75 years old may be made available for research if the researcher provides a copy of the student's death record
