RECAP

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team showed their power at the plate today, knocking two home runs en route to a 7-3 victory over Edgewood College at Butterfield Park Monday afternoon.

Elmhurst (8-24, 3-12 CCIW) scored early and slowly added to their lead throughout Monday evenings game, winning for the second-straight game at home. Despite an early Edgewood (15-15) lead thanks to a home run of their own, the Bluejays were able to overpower the Eagles at the plate and the Bluejay pitching staff shut down the visitors for the final eight innings of the non-conference bout.

Edgewood tallied three runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-run home run over the left field fence and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt scoring another, giving them a 3-0 lead through a half inning. That's when the Bluejays would start their five-run rally in the first. Leadoff hitter Marty Fraga would be hit by a pitch before Tommy Wichgers launched a two-run long ball to left field, cutting the deficit to one. After a Ryan Thrawl single and an error put two runners on, still with no outs, Erik Malott took a trot around the bases with another home run to left field, putting Elmhurst up 5-3 through one inning.

From there, the Bluejays would tally on runs in the third and the eighth innings, with John Swiderek doubling in a runner and a passed ball scoring Malott from third. After a rocky start on the mound for the Jays, five pitchers were used to pitch the final eight innings, resulting in no runs allowed and just six hits, with Ryan McGinley earning the win on the mound thanks to two shutout innings and Robert Brenneman earning the first Bluejay save of the season.
