John D. Archer, 81, of 513 Lake Dr., died March 2, 2009, at his home.
He was born Oct. 3, 1927, in Davis County, Iowa, to Gene and Viola Haines Archer. He married Evelyn Oiler June 9, 1947. She preceded him in death June 15, 1999. He married Mary Groth Jan. 22, 2001.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1945, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He worked for John Morrell and Co. after his discharge from the military. He worked for Levi Strauss and Co. as a computer programmer and supervisor first in California and then in Amarillo, Texas. He moved back to Ottumwa in 2001. He was a member of First Pentecostal Assembly of God. John enjoyed playing all kinds of games.
Surviving is his wife, Mary; two sons, Michael (Kim) Archer of Las Vegas, Nev., and Steven (Judy) Archer of Hornell, N.Y.; a daughter, Joy (David) Dunham of Aurora, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Ronda (Bill) Goddard of Ottumwa; a stepson, Daniel Groth of Ottumwa; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, DeWayne Archer of Somernia, Calif. and Francis (Diane) Archer of Ottumwa; a sister, Edna Shaw of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Missy Archer; four brothers, Wilbur, Alva, Carl and Laverne Archer and a sister, Marie Boyce.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Assembly of God with Rev. Richard Schlotter and Rev. George Edgerly officiating.
