Summary

  • Director Matthew Vaughn plans for a trilogy of Kick-Ass reboot films, with the first already shot and two other movies to succeed it.
  • The first two films, School Fight and Vram, will build up to the final movie, Kick-Ass, which will serve as the end of the story.
  • Original stars like Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz are unlikely to be returning for the reboot, but the new films may have the same tone as the original duology because of Vaughn's involvement.

Director Matthew Vaughn reveals a massive update for the upcoming Kick-Ass reboot, revealing plans for a trilogy that are already in motion. Vaughn previously directed 2010's Kick-Ass, a film adaptation of a comic franchise of the same name. While a sequel was released in 2013, the director revealed in 2023 that the franchise will be rebooted, with a goal of starting to film in 2024.

Speaking with Collider, however, Vaughn revealed the Kick-Ass reboot will be a trilogy of films, the first of which has already been shot. The director revealed the scripting process for the third film - titled Kick-Ass - is halfway done, but will be preceded by two other movies first: School Fight and Vram. Check out what Vaughn had to say below:

We’re halfway through [the script]. There’s a very, very dare I say it... and it’s gonna be a cliche coming out of this head of mine. It is a very, very meta universe. It is what, you know, 'Kick Ass' was reinventing and creating a R-rated superhero and no one was really doing it. This is taking that whole concept to a worthy…not even a sequel, because I think it’s just a whole new way of doing 'Kick Ass,' which couldn’t be more 'Kick Ass.'

The trilogy will be School Fight, this movie, let's call it Vram for the time being, and then Kick-Ass, and they're all connected.

So, when this (VRAM) is finished, I think this will launch, I'll be conservative on this, if we're lucky, Toronto, if we're not lucky, Sundance. Well, this year, next year, if you know what I mean.

What The Reboot Trilogy Means For Kick-Ass

Vaughn also explained that School Fight has already been filmed, and while Vram is currently in production, there are no concrete plans to finish the trilogy before the first movie gets released. Given the titles of the first two films, it appears they will be building up to Kick-Ass, which will serve to bookend the story. Since it's a reboot, though, it means original film stars like Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz won't be coming back.

The subversive superhero comedy is clearly taking a different form, as the trilogy won't be starting with a movie named after the franchise. However, given the popularity of dark comedies featuring superpowers like The Boys in recent years, it's likely the series will find plenty of success. While the cast of the new Kick-Ass will differ, Vaughn's involvement indicates it will have the same tone as the original duology.

Although Aaron Taylor-Johnson doesn’t seem to be returning for the Kick-ass reboot, the actor must come back so that he can be seamlessly replaced.

While not much is known about the movies themselves, the unique title for each film indicates it will be a fresh take on the series. It's possible Kick-Ass itself will be just the start of an even broader series, depending on what the director's plans are for the first two installments. With a reboot trilogy officially deep into production, it may not be long until more news about what to expect gets revealed.

Matthew Vaughn's next movie is Argylle, releasing in theaters on February 2.
