5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Populist Masterpiece in an Awesome DIGIBOOK!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 4 December 2023
I purchased a 75th anniversary edition of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
The movie was remastered in 4k back in 2014 and put on a blu-ray disc, not to be confused with a UHD 4k disc.
The disc comes in a “digibook,” which is basically a booklet with a blu-ray case attached to its last page. I must say I’m quite fond of the stylish and sleek design of the digibook, the content of which I enjoyed reading as well. In addition, the book seems much more sturdy than a regular blu-ray case, which I appreciate.
To be candid, I’m not particularly impressed with the image quality of this 4k remastered edition especially after I was recently blown away by that of To Catch a Thief, which was also restored in 4k and placed on a regular blu-ray disc, but I understand that they did their best considering certain factors such as…
*TCAT is more than 10 years younger than MSGTW.
*MSGTW’s film reels were severely damaged according to the booklet.
*They remastered MSGTW in 4k in 2014 whereas TCAT got the same treatment in 2020.
As for the movie itself, I suppose it would be redundant to rave about it in this review since if you are thinking about buying this blu-ray, you most likely have already seen it. But I feel compelled to say here that it’s been almost 85 years since this picture was originally released and yet it’s still immensely relevant and powerfully resonating to this day. Jimmy Stewart’s passionate and earnest delivery of the iconic lines in the movie unfailingly gives me goosebumps and gets me in tears.
And the sense of patriotism, which has been sorely missed by the modern American audience, is ubiquitous in this uniquely American movie directed by none other than Frank Capra.
As more and more Americans become aware of the entrenched corruption in D.C. and the false narratives pushed forward by the mainstream media owned by the ruling class, I hope this movie will continue to be valued, cherished and loved for decades or even centuries to come.
