Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Yeah, I think any time you pitch somewhere multiple times, whether it's at home or on the road, you kind of get comfortable. You know what to expect. The mound, pretty much the environment you're going to be working in. It helps you visualize better just the preparation of going into the game." - Cobb, Alex. Cobb carrying undefeated mark at Tropicana Field. Chastain, Bill. MLB Staff Writer. 12 September 2013.

Did you know that Alex Cobb is the first pitcher in Major League history to strikeout four batters in an inning during an interleague game? Did you know that during that same game he tied the American League record for strikeouts through the 3rd inning, strikeouts through the 4th inning and strikeouts through the 5th inning record?

Alex Cobb was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer (see video above) on June 15, 2013. Cobb left the field on a stretcher, was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida, and suffered a mild concussion. Cobb missed two months, returning to the mound on August 15, 2013, and the following season he endorsed a product designed to help protect young ball players from similar injuries: the isoBLOX padded cap insert. Cobb said, "If boys and girls start wearing protective inserts, it will become second nature for them when theyre older. I want to be a part of the evolution toward introducing this successfully at the big league level and I think the best way to do it is by starting at youth ages. My optimism is through the roof. The biggest thing is to further the process for technology to catch up, where we can wear it without altering mechanics or comfort—this is the best step."

On July 23, 2014, top of the second inning, Alex Cobb stepped to the plate and hit a double off Lance Lynn in Busch Stadium. It was Cobb's first Major League hit and Yunel Escobar was on second, scored, giving Alex his first big league RBI as well.
