1 The New Gate

Susan and her co-workers have their work life disrupted by their new boss, Ian Maxtone-Graham, who transforms The Gate into an upscale men's magazine. Maddy quits and Ian brings along his executive assistant, Miranda Charles, and hires sportswriter Nate Neborsky and photographer Oliver Brown.
2 The Billboard

When Oliver suggests taking pictures of the staff to put in their columns, Susan objects because she never looks good in photographs. But Oliver puts Susan at ease and gets a beautiful portrait of her. Ian likes it so much that he makes a huge billboard out of it. Susan is initially mortified, but she soon enjoys the adulation. Meanwhile, Nate tries to secure an interview with baseball great Reggie Jackson. After seeing Susan on the billboard, Reggie demands a date with her in return for the interview.
3 The Pushkin Letters

Susan pretends to be fluent in Russian and translates for Ian's visiting Russian friend. After hearing her interpretation, Ian purchases some old Russian letters, thinking they were written by poet Alexander Pushkin, for a large sum of money. When he decides to publish the letters, Susan finds out they are worthless, and Oliver comes to her rescue.
4 Vicki Moves In

Susan tells Vicki how much she dislikes the idea of having her move into her building. Vicki moves in anyway. Susan accidentally breaks Ian's bookstand, which she believes is a precious heirloom. Luis buys a similar bookstand; while Ian confesses to Nate that the bookstand was only junk.

Susan feels uncomfortable around Oliver and invites Vicki to help them carve pumpkins. She becomes upset when she learns Oliver stays all night with Vicki. After learning he only slept on the couch, Susan tells Oliver she does not want to be one of his flings.

While researching a story on professional cheerleaders, Susan passes the auditions and considers accepting the job. She learns that Claire, the head cheerleader, is the ex-wife of Nate and he still loves her and their daughter. Susan rejects the cheerleading position.

Susan looks up 1970s pop star Leif Garrett after realizing she has not accomplsihed any of the goals she set as a child. Leif follows her and sings her a song during Maddy's marriage to Jerry Springer. Miranda gets a new car after Ian crashes hers while learning to drive.

Oliver becomes nervous and paranoid when Susan refers to him as her boyfriend to rebuff a flirtatious water deliveryman. Later when Oliver takes ill, a worried Susan lies to the paramedic and claims to be Oliver's fiancée in order to ride with him in the ambulance. While Oliver is recuperating, Susan explains the truth and chastises Oliver for his fear of commitment. Meanwhile, Ian's attempt to bond with his employees results in alienation instead.

Meanwhile, Ian gets into trouble when he asks Miranda for advice on how to impress his new African-American date.

Susan accepts a prominent on-air cable TV position in New York. Unaware of Susan's decision, Oliver buys a house in San Francisco, hoping to show his commitment to her. At first, Susan chooses her career over Oliver's dubious attempts to resume their relationship. But when he proposes marriage, she accepts. She remains at The Gate, where a desperate Ian has promised to double her salary and clean her apartment every week.

Susan regrets rejecting the New York job offer. Finally, for the second time, Susan walks to the altar--and for the second time, she starts to flee before completing the ceremony. However, Susan returns and asks Oliver to forget getting married for now and to join her in New York instead. She regains the broadcasting job, and the couple promise to stay together forever, wedding or no wedding.
