Moody, contemplative drama that is terrific for a majority of the runtime but takes a turn towards the end that just doesn't gel with the rest of the film. All four of the main actors are excellent, but Ralph Fiennes deserves special mention as this performance is right up there with the best. The film has many wonderful shots throughout that make me wonder how they pulled it off, and the location on an Italian island is absolutely gorgeous. So, there are many positives to make this film worth a watch indeed, but the last act really derails the film and kills all the momentum it had.

This is the second film I have seen directed by Luca Guadagnino. The other one was Io sono l'amore, not the famous one. I find him a strange director. The two films I’ve seen are very Stylish without having much of a style...maybe that’s unfair, maybe it is that the style has little purpose other than being Stylish. There’s an early scene when the characters were talking in a car and we watched the car in long shot travelling along the road through the island’s scenery; then they walk up to their house, again in long shot – the dialogue seemed to be introducing us to the characters, but the distance from the speakers drained out any real purpose – all we get is some dead views of the characters in the landscape (but maybe that had more relevance than I am allowing). It just seemed a bit pointless. Guadagnino’s methods, however, are big on character and atmosphere. Tilda Swinton is a rock star who is recuperating from an operation on her throat; Matthias Schoenaerts is her partner, a documentary filmmaker – they are hanging out on an Italian island. Ralph Fiennes arrives with his daughter Dakota Johnson. Fiennes was once Swinton’s manager and lover, as well as a good friend of Schoenaerts. He has only just found out that he has a daughter. They sit around the pool, they go to a local festival, they interact. There’s sexual tension: Fiennes still desires Swinton...and has Johnson got her eye on Schoenaerts? Is he reacting? Fiennes is outgoing and bragging and the life of the party...this seems to be grate on Schoenaerts...and maybe Swinton. And then a character is killed and the atmosphere changes. And so do the concerns of the film, but I don’t know how it all adds up. As with Io sono l'amore, I found A Bigger Splash a little intriguing, but a very irritating film. It was trying too hard trying to be intriguing, but there was little payoff.

A film about privilige and its abuse - how some people can get away with things others wouldn't, simply because of who they are. This theme expresses itself in a myriad of ways throughout.
As for the sensual and psychological elements that may have drawn you here, they are present and correct. The characters are dissected quite nicely here, and I won't repeat their analysis - I'll only add that they all signify the overall theme in one way or another.

Τhis, not so bad, remake of ''La Piscine'',consists of two parts. The first one is dull, boring, something like a tourist info video, during which nothing really happens. The second one is more interesting, there is action and reason for filming and watching it,so it is true that the movie is much too long. Both Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton give stunning performances and all in all the film is not so bad, despite its flaws.

Wow, what a movie, what a setting, what great acting, tension, scenery, story and then when it hits it's peak, a crash and it all comes tumbling down.
Maybe it was meant to be like this or maybe the director did not know how to end it after taking us there, the end will leave you unfulfilled.
The acting is simply phenomenal specially of the characters Harry and Marianne and the camera work even more refreshing. It's like watching a Hemingway classic such is the story.
I only wish the ending was more just, but for everything else including the soundtrack, this is a must watch.
Best scene: Harry dancing to Emotional Rescue

Beautiful locale and a beautiful physical performance from Ralph Fiennes. Otherwise a bundle of attempted brushstrokes. spoiler: click to read
The meat of the movie is its sexual tension and the character studies therein. Plays out predictably without catharsis. The script could have became a good working tragedy and a much better film but they veered at the crucial moments. Unfortunate.

Its a really fine piece of work, watching Fiennes getting off to 80s stones is an absolute blast.
