The answer, resolutely, was yes, thanks to the dedicated efforts of series co-creators Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman. The pair originally started as writers for Family Guy following stints on a handful of other live-action sitcoms (Homeboys From Outer Space, anyone?) before graduating to creators of American Dad, and subsequently took over writing and producing the show. Macfarlane, of course, went back to Family Guy, offering one string of hilarious non sequiturs after another, but Barker and Weitzman decided to take a different approach: rather than simply aiming at every relevant pop cultural target known to mankind, they would make the series a true family show, offering emotional resonance in addition to those irresistible punch lines.
IGN recently spoke to Barker and Weitzman via phone about American Dad's debut on DVD this week (check out the review by clicking here). In addition to talking about the show's evolution from Family Guy follower to full-fledged series, the pair discuss their own favorite animated series, and detail the labyrinthine process of putting each episode together.
