Nicklas Backstrom Clears Up Rumors About His Absence and Future with Capitals

Washington Capitals star Nicklas Backstrom has refuted rumors about the reasons behind his indefinite absence from the team, firmly denying reports of a fallout with head coach Spencer Carbery as the cause of his time away. In an effort to set the record straight, Backstrom spoke out against claims made by the Radiosporten Hockey program on Sverige Radio, which suggested his absence was due to internal conflicts rather than an injury.

“That’s not true,” Backstrom asserted in an interview with the Swedish outlet Aftonbladet, dismissing the speculation outright.

The 36-year-old Swedish center, who has made a significant impact in his career with the Capitals, appeared in only eight games this season, contributing one assist. His limited participation came as a result of a lingering hip issue, which failed to improve post-surgery. Backstrom underwent a hip resurfacing procedure in June 2022 but has struggled to return to his previous form.

In a November statement, Backstrom announced his decision to take an indefinite leave. “Given my ongoing injury situation, I decided to take some time and step away from the game. This is a difficult decision, but one that I feel is right for my health at this time,” he explained, expressing gratitude for the support from his team, organization, and fans, and requesting privacy as he evaluates his future in hockey.

Despite his efforts to recuperate and a hope that a full offseason could restore his prior capabilities, the distinguished playmaker has found it challenging to regain his previous level of play. With one year remaining on his contract, at a $9.2 million cap hit, general manager Brian MacLellan indicated plans for Backstrom to spend that year on long-term injured reserve.

As of yet, Backstrom has not declared any intentions regarding his future in the sport or mentioned retirement. Since stepping back, he has not engaged with local media, leaving fans to reflect on his remarkable contributions to the Capitals. Throughout his distinguished career, Backstrom accumulated 271 goals and 762 assists, totaling 1,033 points over 1,105 games, cementing a remarkable legacy in Washington, D.C.
