Windows 10 - how to uninstall and reinstall network adapter driver - Microsoft Community

Windows 10 - how to uninstall and reinstall network adapter driver without WiFi?

My laptop came with Windows 10 installed. Two days ago, it suddenly stopped connecting to WiFi.

A Microsoft support engineer suggested:

"Method 2: Uninstall driver

If the issue persists. Uninstall the network adapter driver and restart the computer and have Windows automatically install the latest driver upon restart.

1. Press Windows key  + X and select device manager.

2. Expand network adapter.

3. Right click on the driver and uninstall it.

4. Restart the computer and check the functionality."

Questions:

(1) When Windows automatically installs the latest driver upon restart, does it find the latest driver from the Internet? Or does it find the latest driver from the hard drive of the laptop?

(2) If it needs to find the latest driver from the Internet, how doe it do it if my laptop cannot connect to the WiFi?

Hi Sunny,

Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

It finds the latest drivers from the hard drive.

Some of the things that you can perform to get the issue fixed are:

Update the network adapter driver

Roll back the network adapter driver

Temporarily turn off firewalls

Fix network connection issues

Please revert if you face any issues with WiFi not working.

Thank you.

Hi Jessen,

>>Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

I bought the laptop 3 months ago.

The only change I made was to download a chess game from Microsoft.

Other than that, I did not make any other change.

But, Windows 10 makes very frequent, automatic, forced update.

So, to answer your question, I only made one change, but Microsoft has made many, many changes on my laptop.

>>It finds the latest drivers from the hard drive.

So, when I uninstall and reinstall the network adapter driver, I do not need internet connection?

Thank you.

Hi Sunny,

In response to your query, when you uninstall the network adapter driver and restart the computer, Windows will automatically look for stored drivers from your system and get it installed even if there is no network connectivity.

Hope this answers your query.

I uninstalled the network adapter driver, and reinstalled it.

It did not fix the original problem. My laptop still cannot connect to WiFi.
