Password Reset

If you forgot the password you use to sign in to services like Outlook.com, Skype, OneDrive, and Xbox Live you might need to reset it. First, check to make sure that Caps Lock isn't on, because passwords are case-sensitive. If you're sure you're using the right password but still can't sign in, you may need to reset your Microsoft Account password

To reset your password:

  1. Go to the Reset your password page - https://aka.ms/MSAPWreset
  2. The short video provides step by step guide on how to reset your Microsoft Account Password
  3. To learn more on how you can protect your Microsoft Account, visit https://aka.ms/ProtectMSA

Account Recovery

If resetting your Microsoft Account password does not work, you may still recover your account by answering the Recovery Form.  The account recovery form is meant to be the last option to get you back into your account. the recovery form gives you a chance to prove that you own your account.

Fill out Recovery Form

  1. Go to https://account.live.com/acsr
  2. Enter a working email address that we can use to contact you about your account recovery
  3. The short video provides step by step guide on how to recover your Microsoft Account through ACSR
  4. To lean more on Recovering Microsoft Account, please visit https://aka.ms/MSArecovery

Note:

The account recovery form works by asking questions about your account that only you could answer. Then, we review your answers and respond within 24 hours with either instructions to get back in to your account or a denial. Keep these tips in mind to help you succeed:

  • Use a computer we’ll recognize. If possible, fill out the form on a computer that you’ve used to sign in to your account before.
  • Answer as many questions as possible. Not all the questions will apply to you, and that's ok. Don't worry if you don't have an answer. But it's better to guess and be close than to leave a question blank.
  • Give us a working email to contact you. We won't use this email address for spam, only to give you the results of your recovery request. You can even use a friend's account, or create a free temporary email.
  • If you have two-step verification turned on for your account, the recovery form won’t work. When you turn on two-step verification, we promise not to let anyone sign in without two forms of identification, no matter how much information they know about your account. Visit this page to learn more about two step verification

I have been in chat with several agents who keep getting cut off. I was advised to change my password but cannot do this as it is taking you 30 days to change my new phone number due to a burglary.  In the meantime my emails are being read by an unknown 3rd party. I asked for a phone call and received one from Roy who was rude and extremely unhelpful.

The issue still remains that every time I access an email the secure padlock disappears and ! this symbol appears to inform me that I am not secure.

The advice given was to change my password to this account.

However I can not do this as I can not access this page because I am waiting for YOU to update my security information due to a change of phone number.  The Police advised I change my phone number due to a number of attempted burglaries...I cannot win.

In the meantime someone else has access to my hotmail account and I can do nothing please advise...

Ever since I downloaded Windows 10, I have been met with so many logins it is totally pathetic. There is a VPN virus that is making the rounds right now. It gets into your machines and devices when you login. This is a good time to become so paranoid it is ridiculous. I cannot get in to remove my credit card number. I'm sitting here waiting for the day that I end up with thousand dollar charges on my credit card because I have to wait 30 days to get into my account to take care of that. I am so sick of windows that I'm just about to have a heart attack from it. Somebody better get off of their butts and fix it

This issue could easily be resolved by simply providing a link to the password reset page rather than forcing users to sit through a 5-minute video.  The page is listed in the instructions but it isn't clear that all you have to do is go to https://aka.ms/MSAPWreset and follow the onscreen prompts.

Can't understand why you have to wait 30 days to make changes. Do we really have to make changes one at a time and wait 30 days between each one? Ridiculous.

The system to recover your password requires that you knew the password in the first place, if you cannot type in old passwords used for the email account the form is rejected.

The tech guy suggested that you type "I do not know my password" and that will alert Microsoft, well that does not work, so on to the next process account reinstatement.

All good until one gets to the question "contacts you have sent an email to" and "subject of recent emails".

If you have never used the email because it is a requirement of registering office 365 and you don't know the password then everything Microsoft asks is a nonsense.

So what does one do?
