After hired hand Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey) murders the father of 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Kim Darby), she seeks vengeance and hires U.S. Marshal "Rooster" Cogburn (John Wayne), a man of "true grit," to track Chaney into Indian territory. As the two begin their pursuit, a Texas Ranger, La Boeuf (Glen Campbell), joins the manhunt in hopes of capturing Chaney for the murder of a Texas senator and collecting a substantial reward. Wayne carried this film and deserved the Oscar. I think the movie accurately portrayed the "Old West" was a lawless tough place to live in. But the script and acting, except for Wayne, weren't that good. The talking was too formal and stiff. Overall a good film.

A bit ahead of its time but held back by an avoidance of any discussion on fundamental issues. Kim Darby is enchanting and John Wayne brings a beautiful chemistry to the pair. The other dude is kinda forgettable. The stunt work and choreography are really impressive for the time and the beautiful landscapes look amazing in full color. It's a nice twist on a classic Western.

It has the scenery, the gunplay, and the Duke that we all expect from a stereotypical Western. Its literary roots in a somewhat unconventional story foregrounding the revenge tale of a 14 year old girl give it a high-mindedness lacking in other Westerns and the elegiac tone of late period John Wayne and later period Hollywood elevate this film and make it something special.
