Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Far too often for True Grit to quite overcome, [Wayne's] larger-than-life turn flirts with, if not outright topples into, self-parody. C Wayne carried this film and deserved the Oscar. I think the movie accurately portrayed the "Old West" was a lawless tough place to live in. But the script and acting, except for Wayne, weren't that good. The talking was too formal and stiff. Overall a good film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review jeanieforever You must have a bladder the size of a peanut! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review Rami A Western and John Wayne fans will find True Grit to be rather entertaining. John Wayne gives his best performance here. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/24/23 Full Review Kyle C A bit ahead of its time but held back by an avoidance of any discussion on fundamental issues. Kim Darby is enchanting and John Wayne brings a beautiful chemistry to the pair. The other dude is kinda forgettable. The stunt work and choreography are really impressive for the time and the beautiful landscapes look amazing in full color. It's a nice twist on a classic Western. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/17/23 Full Review Kerry W Rating: 7/10. 74/100 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/23 Full Review David F It has the scenery, the gunplay, and the Duke that we all expect from a stereotypical Western. Its literary roots in a somewhat unconventional story foregrounding the revenge tale of a 14 year old girl give it a high-mindedness lacking in other Westerns and the elegiac tone of late period John Wayne and later period Hollywood elevate this film and make it something special.
