Summary

  • Twisters is a sequel to the 1996 movie Twister, directed by Lee Isaac Chung and starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones.
  • The movie is set to be released on July 19, 2024.

A new trailer offers a closer look at Twisters. The movie, which was directed by Minari's Lee Isaac Chung, is a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster movie Twister, which was the second highest-grossing movie of that year worldwide. Starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, the sequel will follow a scientist named Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones) whose desire to test a new way to track storms brings her and her team in the orbit of the reckless storm-chaser Tyler Owens (Powell), with whom they embark on a series of perilous adventures.

Universal Pictures has now unleashed the latest trailer for the upcoming Twisters. Check it out below:

The trailer expands on previously released footage of a rodeo being evacuated during a twister, before showing Kate being reluctantly pulled back into the field when a series of abnormal twisters begin to strike the United States. The events that the characters must survive include a tornado flinging heavy equipment around Reno and a massive twister that pulls in a huge pillar of flame.

Everything The New Twisters Trailer Reveals About The Disaster Movie

New Footage Sheds Light On Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones' Characters

Although the previous Twisters trailer already outlined the basic plot of the disaster movie sequel, the new video offers quite a bit more detail about the characters populating the story. This includes the lead character Kate. It was previously revealed that she had a personal connection to the destructive power of tornadoes, but the expanded rodeo sequence in the beginning makes it much more clear that the scene in question is probably a flashback explaining how she lost somebody important during the disaster, given her reaction when a truck is sucked into the sky.

The core Twisters characters are also hugely expanded upon later in the new trailer. Tyler is given more of a chance to shine as the footage explores his brash and opportunistic approach to his passion for storm-chasing, as well as his friction with Kate, whom he perceives to be a "city girl." However, as the trailer progresses and they find themselves working better as a team, it seems that the friction between Tyler and Kate may eventually strike a romantic spark.

The Twisters cast also includes Maura Tierney, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, and Kiernan Shipka playing as-yet-unannounced characters.

So far, it seems that the duo will be the lead characters of Twisters, with the rest of the ensemble supporting their storyline. Just like the original movie, it also seems like the sequel will be packed with storms, though the escalation of the titular tempests will go far above and beyond what the original was able to achieve with the special effects of the 1990s. It remains to be seen if the new movie is a hit at the same level as the 1996 movie, but with those intense tornadoes combined with the depth of character shown in this new trailer, it could very well be a smash.
