The ice is thin, come on dive in
Underneath my lucid skin
The cold is lost, forgotten
Hours pass, days pass, time stood still
Light gets dark and darkness fills
My secret heart forbidden

I think you worried for me then
The subtle way that I'd give in, but I know
You like the show
Tied down to this bed of shame
You tried to move around the pain but, oh
Your soul is anchored

The only comfort is the moving of the river
You enter into me, a lie upon your lips
Offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get
Only a fool's here

Well, I don't like your tragic sighs
As if your god has passed you by
Well, hey fool
That's your deception
Your angels speak with jilted tongues
The serpent's tale has come undone
You have no strength to squander

The only comfort is the moving of the river
You enter into me, a lie upon your lips
Offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get
Only a fool's here to stay
Only a fool's here to stay
Only a fool's here

I can see how it could relate to a prostitute. In fact, that makes a lot ofperfect sense...

Ice could signify the prostitute true unwillingness to commit to the sex...but it's thin, because in her mind, she has to do it. Dive in means just do it. The coldness of the ice is forgotten once the initial "plunge is taken," because she probably becomes caught up in the act.

Of course, the whole song is extremely dark and sad...this speaker obviously is haunted by herself and her actions, and she wishes she could find a way out, but she thinks that she can't.

The second verse could almost be like the roles of shame reversed; instead of the prostitute being ashamed during the actual act, after the sex, the man who paid her realizes how shameful what he did is. He sighs knowing what he did was wrong, and he tries to find in his heart maybe some comfort, but his god has abandoned him, and his angels are nothing but tongues without a body...the serpent's tail has come undone (the realization of sin and humiliation).

But really...this song could be interpreted in a lot of different ways. Obviously, though, it has strong sexual undertones.

This is my favourite song of her's. It's very dark in tone and you get the feeling this person is in a dark place. 2 people are in a sexual relationship but it doesn't make them happy. It's very unhealthy for them and quite twisted.

'The ice is thin come on dive in underneath my lucid skin the cold is lost, forgotten'

I think the sex becomes mechanical and she shuts down during it because she's probably ashamed in some way of what they are doing.

'Hours pass days pass time stands still light gets dark and darkness fills my secret heart forbidden... I think you worried for me then the subtle ways that I'd give in but I know you liked the show'

I think the 'secret heart forbiddden' line means that she wants to feel something for him but it's forbidden. He seems to be playing her and she's torn between wanting him and resenting him.

'tied down to this bed of shame you tried to move around the pain but oh your soul is anchored The only comfort is the moving of the river You enter into me, a lie upon your lips offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get only a fool's here...'

I think it's degrading for her to do this with him, without any real feeling but he tells her what she wants to hear in the moment, so she lies to herself that he means it when she knows he really doesn't.

'I don't like your tragic sighs as if your god has passed you by well hey fool that's your deception your angels speak with jilted tongues the serpent's tale has come undone you have no strength to squander'

He's not happy with himself and he makes sure she knows it. She's sick of the excuses and she's basically saying you're a hypocrite.

'only a fool's here to stay only a fool's here to stay only a fool's here'

I think she's ended it and is bitter towards him for putting her through that, 'only a fool's here' means he's the fool in the end.

'You enter into me, a lie upon your lips offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get only a fool's here...'

I think this is the most tragic part of the song and sum's it up, She knows he's using her and she lets him cause she's thinking that's all she's worth cause the relationship is so messed up xxxx

I love this song. its full of emotion..her voice shows it so well in many of her songs. BUT in the version i have of this song..the lyrics at the end are different..they're more like "do not lie, do not dream" etc. ANYWAYS. good song!

She is accepting less than she needs. He can't give the emotion that she craves. As many do, she settles for much less. The thin ice was created by her desire for deep emotional and physical fullfillment ,once protected by cold, hard emotion. Rivers flowing are her melting desire. She knows he can't fullfill her needs by accepts some warm comfort. He looks at life much to cynically. Song stirs wonderful spectrum of human emotions.... Sarah a true artist.

the actual song meaning comes from a time sarah spent in the far east- it's about the resignation of young girls to become prostitiutes in singapore. she spent weeks talking with some of the girls and i believe started a human-interest group to bring international attention to the way things are being done in 3rd world coutnries.

Personally, the song is about having a sexual relationship with someone you care about but who doesn't care about you. The far east meaning totally makes sense but I think you can see it my way. Especially when she says "only a fool's here to stay."
