I am also a HUGE fan of the Roasts, and I must say this one is now my favorite, even more then the infamous Pamela Anderson Roast, or Bob Saget.
Betty White tells some greatly offensive jokes that completley caught me off guard, and the actors who played Uhura and Sulu also appear (warning: George Takei had just 'come out' before this roast was filmed, and is the focus of ALOT of mature gay jokes) Just as dirty if not more then previous roasts I highly recomend to anyone who enjoys Shatner, filthy comedy or Roasts in general.
Don't get me wrong, I am opposed to being politically correct. I can crack a lot of harsh jokes (jokes mind you) about race, religion and sexual preference. But I simply got bored with all the rude Gay Jokes. George seemed to like the jokes or the attention.
However, to me this roast was worth it to see Clint Howard reprise his role as Balok (is that how you spell it??) from the episode THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER from the first season of the original series of star trek. This had me on the floor and wanting to tell all my trek friends about it. I am buying it just for the Tranya.

On one level it depends on how you feel about William Shatner; I personally love the man. I have been a huge fan of Star Trek since childhood, and as I have gotten older this has led to me exploring other work by him. I have enjoyed his books, other televison appearances, and even his music (well some of it!); I genuinely feel that William Shatner is an immensely talented man, he has a razor sharp wit and is far more intelligent and talented than I feel many people appreciate. I know he can sometimes be a tad 'corny', his acting has been decribed as a bit 'wooden' (on ocassion rightly so, but clearly these critics haven't seen his work in Boston Legal) and yes, the aforementioned 'music' career has at times been just so bad it was actually embarassing!
On another level it depends on how you feel about crass, rude and even vulgar humour; for do not be mistaken, this DVD most certainly offers all of this to quite an extreme level, the 18 rating being very much justified!
I personally have no problem with any of the above, so the combination of William Shatner and vulgar humour fills me with joy!
The show itself, and I am offering this description for those unfamiliar with the concept of 'Roasts', consists of William Shatner sitting on a stage in front of a large live audience partially made up of other celebrities , a succession of friends, colleagues and comedians then proceed to provide increasingly insulting personal and rude comments, all the while the 'Guest of Honour' (on this ocassion William Shatner) has to sit there and shut up! On this particular Roast no subject is sacred, even the subject that has fascinated people for decades, the wig/hairpiece/toupee, is discussed and ridiculed at length! At the end of the torment the 'victim' aka Guest of Honour (GOH) is given the chance to take centre stage and have some sort of revenge.
I have seen several of these Roasts now, and must admit that not all of the GOH's have been capable of offering a satisfying reposte, but fear not, on this occassion William Shatner does not disappoint and more than holds his own.
So to summarise, you don't have to necessarily be a fan of William Shatner to enjoy this DVD (although it is a bonus), you do however need a pretty strong tolerance of very vulgar and rude language; if this sounds like you then this DVD may be just for you!
I almost split a gut I was laughing so much the first half, embarrassingly as the jokes were very mean in nature. But by the time you get to the second half the jokes are not really funny anymore because it is just more of the same thing; and my heavens it starts to not seem to be funny and really cruel to people.
If you know what roasts are like, this is not a bad choice. I am not really a roast person as I do not like cruel or cheap jokes -- locker room humour; sort of takes you back to how terrible people were in high school to each other, and looking back you feel badly.
William Shatner is a riot though .. very likeable fellow. Most people kept the jokes funny, but certainly as it goes along people are being nasty more then funny -- how do they think of things like that.
So be warned. It is a Roast, not bad EXTRA either with back stage comments from people arriving etc. First half very good ... just goes on too long.
