Jacob Burckhardt created the modern concept of the Renaissance and exaggerated the individuality and secularism of the Renaissance. He failed to recognize how religious it was, too. Scholars now disagree with him since the Renaissance was not, in fact, a sudden or cultural break from the Middle Ages.
