Why am I referencing Jim Morrison and The Doors in a review of Robby Krieger's solo work? Because Krieger references The Doors in "Singularity." Krieger is able to revisit The Doors without compromising the integrity of new material. Krieger has mentioned the inspiration for "Singularity" is a painting he did (which is used on the CD cover) of the event horizon of a black hole, the point at which light can't escape and falls back in on itself. As such, the songs do seem to fall back on to the various influences in Krieger's career. Besides the obvious Doors references, he has an homage to John Coltrane, and revisits his roots with with flamenco and slide guitar explorations.
At its best a Doors song could give the listener the feeling of traveling, or that the music was taking you on a journey. "Let It Slide" is able to incorporate that feeling. "Let It Slide" has little ribbons of "Moonlight Drive" interspersed in it. Which is not obvious at first. It seems familiar, but you're not sure why, and then as the song plays out, it slowly occurs to you what's going on in the music.
Krieger also takes a crack at reimagining Doors songs that he was instrumental in. In his previous solo CD "Cinematix" Krieger reworked and reimagined "Peace Frog", which started life as a Doors instrumental (when they played "Peace Frog" live they usually played it as an instrumental) as "War Toad." On "Singularity" it is "Spanish Caravan" that Krieger has reimagined as "Russian Caravan". Krieger recreates a solo that was cut from "Spanish Caravan" and uses it as an intro to "Russian Caravan", which has a nice old world feel of Segovia's Spain which was sort of the influence for "Spanish Caravan."
But don't let all the talk of Doors influences fool you, "Singularity" is also a very traditional cool Jazz exploration. Krieger was probably right in naming the CD after something that occurs in outer space. The instrumentals all sound like they're a journey into space, whether it's outer space or just whatever space the music can take you to. Oddly enough, for a CD created by a guitarist "Singularity" has some heavy keyboard moments. An influence from Doors keyboardist RayManzarek?
In "Singularity" Robby Krieger is able to explore his Jazz influences and creativity while simultaneously exploring his Doors roots. "Singularity" is a good vehicle for Doors fans wanting to try something new and explore musical areas they haven`t before, but still have the luxury of comfortable surroundings The Doors references provide.
Singularity has more reference points for Doors fans than "Cinematix" did without being a reiteration of The Doors, introducing listeners to Krieger's expanding horizons as a guitarist.
