So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
I had forgotten that George Harrison produced this song for Badfinger. Actually, I was mistaking it for a Beatles song when it got stuck in my head today. Leon Russell played the piano part in the studio version. He's from my hometown of Tulsa.

Since I wrote the lyrics to this song back in 1971, (I was 17 yrs old at the time), Day After Day and sent it to a publishing company, they responded with a letter saying Peter Ham wants to use the lyrics to your song. I showed my father the letter at the time and he responded by saying: Don't waste your time sending this back, they just want money! I got so discouraged, I threw out the letter along with all of the songs I had wrote.
I had no proof that I had written the song and had to let it go. I remember my father saying what a fictitious name Peter Ham. They never mentioned Bad Finger as the Artists. At that time I didn't know who Peter Ham was, if they would have mentioned BadFinger, I would have signed the release form. I heard the song on the radio and knew all the words before they had sang.

Peter Ham, Tom Evans, Joe Molland were great artists along with the rest of the band BadFinger. I never get tired of listening to there songs. Peter & Tom, Ended there lifes, but there music will always be cherished and always will make you feel great inside when you hear any of there songs. They were one of the most talented groups of all time because they played with feeling and there heart. <br /> <br /> I never knew the story of there tragic ending, until going online and read every article that I could find. In 1976 the band won there court case and received the well deserved money that they were owed. Peter & Tom were not there at court to receive there money, but I hope there well loved family were paid there share of the money that they deserved. Fame can bring some terrible endings to great stars, that put out 100% of there talent, only to get caught up with people who are greedy and selfish who control the money. I wrote the lyrics for day after day but do not have any proof that I wrote the words. It could have been a blessing that I never sent back the letter that I received from the publishing company. If I had the letter and proof that I had wrote the lyrics I would not want any of the royalties for the song, just reconition that I wrote the lyrics. Peters family deserve all the funds and more. Badfinger didn't last long enough to make their full impact on the world. So sad.
It's about a guy who has a girlfriend or wife and he wants her to come back from I guess some type of trip or maybe something like the Army. This has to be Badfinger's signature song!

Badfinger is about great lyrics that stem from simplicity, not hidden messages. It sounds like kfe2 is right... Badfinger songs are really easy to read on the surface.
George Harrison produced this big hit by Badfinger. You can certainly hear his influence in the guitar solo. Once again another gem with tons of Beatles inspiration.
