Cotyar Appreciation

Doing a rewatch, and I just like to share my appreciation for how great Cotyar is. The actor, Nick Tarabay seemed to always steal the scenes he was in, even those with Avasarala which seems impossible to do. He was a perfectly played supporting character.

I dont recall this character in the books at all, and I think he was a great addition to the UN/Mars/Errinwright political drama that the TV show focussed so much on.

The Expanse TV series has so many great side characters that make this show so fun to watch.

While book Cotyar is pretty ok, show Cotyar blows it out of the water.

According to Ty Franck in an episode of Ty and That Guy, they tried a lot of ways to write in a way for Cotyar to survive in the show through the entire script process. Everyone adored the actor portraying him and his story was so good nobody wanted to see him go.

I feel like the show was an opportunity for them to do a rewrite with a lot of the things they realized they could have done better in the books, like introducing Avasarala and Drummer much earlier and expanding the roles of minor characters like Drummer and Cotyar, making Ashford more sympathetic, etc.

It has been too long to find the source (it was early seasons), but at least one of the authors basically admitted to like being able to have a second chance to flesh out some characters. People like Drummer, I think was because they realized they loved the actress and can have her do much more, but just from the inception of the writing process, they wanted to give more flesh to someone like Errinwright. Then there's someone like Ashford where I think both applied.

There was a Cotyar in the book. He was pretty cool there too. But way under-utilised compared to the show version.

Love how he goes toe-to-toe with Avasarala. Their exchanges are great. He's like "yeah I've been shot, but she's really old".

Best character in Spartacus, and that’s saying something.

That show was so weird. If you watched it with the sound off, you couldn’t be blamed for assuming the dialogue was just one syllable words being yelled loudly. Turn the sound on though, and it’s like Shakespeare.

It's true, his character changed over the run. I'd bet the show runners altered his arc based on the talents of the actor & impact he had on the screen. (Note to self to rewatch Spartacus as pandemic goes back into the shitter.)

One of the main things that makes this show so amazing is the huge amount of side or bit characters who are written and acted like we are just seeing a glimpse of whole other stories.

When Korshunov and Errinwright have their whiskey conversation, you get the distinct impression these guys have had many challenging conversations before.

The French "doctor without borders" guy looks and sounds like he is just desperate to help the people on Eros.

And the big guy bouncer who helps load the Weeping Somnambulist makes me misty every time with his "our life is hard" speech.

These are just a few examples of a huge trend in the show.

Youve nailed it. This is exactly what takes the show from good to great. No character seems to be there just to fill a line or a plot point. They all seem like people. It is a real testament to the script writers and casting directors to be able to bring in such great characters to life.

Ahhh I love Cotyar so much! He's definitely one of my favourites. I liked his relationship with Chrisjen and the history they added with Charanpal. His exchanges with Bobbie were amazing too, and the whole Guanshiyin storyline.

He doesn't do as much in the books. If I recall correctly, Cotyar in the show was combined with elements of Soren from the books.

He confused Cotyar with Cortázar, Cotyar is barely in the books. He's a very minor character in Caliban's War.

I really like the show Cotyar, but his clothes never seem to fit right. Was that some conscious decision of the wardrobe crew, or is the actor just awkward to fit? (I've never seen the actor in anything else.)
