About
Every Chinese city once had its Temple of the Town God, the central shrine for Daoist worship. Shànghai's version dates from 1403 when local official Qín Yùbó, who had been posthumously designated as Shànghai's patron town god by the Míng Dynasty Hóngwu emperor (A.D. 1328-98), was finally honored with his own temple, though it didn't take on its present name until 1929.

The old (originally built during Ming Dinasty) but well restored and good looking Tao temple, is located in the middle of a very commercial and busy area, at Middle Fangbang Road. There is a very large number of gift shops, jewelry stores, restaurants and cafes, there is also a continuously large number of Chinese and foreign tourists, as the temple is on everybody's city tour, as well as many locals who come for a short prayer or just some shopping. The temple itself is quite large and full with statues and paintings of various deities, there are monks going around and people lighting up their incense sticks and whispering a few prayers and then, you come out and people are taking loud, shopping, laughing, going about their business and dealing with the trivialities of the everyday life...

It can be hard to find places in busy, ultra-modern Shanghai that make you truly feel a sense of place and the connection with the more distant past, but try to get over here if you can. This temple is absolutely packed with statues and other representations of deities—something new every few steps! Exuberant polytheism, I did not know that Daoism was quite so rich and whimsical. There is also a huge mural featuring (I believe) every animal in the Chinese zodiac along with sages, mystics, and warriors. I went alone, but this would be even more fascinating with a well-informed guide.

My friend and colleague took me downtown to the Shanghai central market, and the Temple was part of the complex. The architecture was traditionally Chinese, and the array of deities (city gods) being worshipped there was interesting. But most interesting was the worshipping - throughout our visit Taoist clergy were moving from chapel to chapel, playing elegantly Chinese sacred music and praying, I guess as part of their morning rituals. It was fascinating to watch and pleasant to listen to. When we left, we were quickly in the central city market, which I guess is the point of having it there - it draws people in. Worth a visit if you're downtown in Shanghai!

We visited here in August 2019. A beautiful temple in a crowded, busy shopping district. We wound our way through the market and into one of the buildings to find something to eat. We were spoilt for choice as there were many restaurants within the market. As we were part of a tour, we really didn't have much opportunity to spend as much time as you need to here to really enjoy the cultural aspects of this busy shopping area. The architecture is amazing!

I went there around June 2019, big crowds there. Heard that their Yue Lao (God of Love) is quite famous. I tried to make a wish like: Hope I can find a suitable guy in my life. The amazing story is, I get into rs with my current bf on Sept 2019! Just 3 mths time and we happily celebrated our anniversary :)

You can find many better and bigger temple in Chiba but this temple is in yu garden and near old town you can take beautiful photos and video

The Temple of the Town God is surrounded by the reconstructed shops and restaurants of the traditional market. You'll find plenty of Gold Jewellery Shops and those selling tourist souvenirs. It's a place to mingle with the locals and get the feel of the city's old culture. You'll find many tea houses. It's a great place for those who like to walk around the city.

The Town God Temple is located in the of the Yuyuan Bazaar, at the south end. Being so difficult to give directions in the Yuyuan Bazaar, let us say that the temple has a big red sign (like 5x4 meters) all in Chinese, with the Chinese word for "entrance" on the right alongside a yellow arrow.
The temple itself is not very big. It has a central patio, where you enter, and then some more rooms (and shops) behind the altar (go around it). One of the shops sells a wide range of paper cut-outs, so typical from China.
To me the most significant item to see is the altar and the paintings on the wall of the main room. The south doors have nice paintings too.
If you happen to visit the Yugarden, do not miss a long walk in the Yuyuan Bazaar and pay a visit to the Town God Temple to put the icing on the cake of your visit.
The entrance fee is 10 RMB.

The streets were lighted up for tourist to visit. Very nice for taking pictures. The surrounding were nicely maintained. You can get all your tourist stuff here. Like local delights and souvenirs. There is a food court selling local cuisine. There is a famous stall selling meat dumplings too. Cost only RMB22 for 16 pcs. Wonder is it because it is cheap? The building were brightly lighted up too. My experience was great and will definitely recommend anyone to pay a visit if you intend to visit Shanghai.

What could be better? In addition to the amazing iconic Chinese building there are tons of tourist shops where you can buy silk, snacks, arts and crafts, etc. and many restaurants. Be sure to actually go into the temple it is beautiful and peaceful. Plan on spending a half day here if you will be having lunch or dinner. definitely worth visiting, even though it is a bit touristy.
