Honestly, from the get-go, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami does have a few things going for it. In contrast to its parent series, there are only two Kardashians to keep up with, and no creepy-looking Bruce Jenner to fill airtime with cutaway reaction shots. The premise is nothing new to the reality genre: cameras follow people around as they begin a new venture. We've seen it with new restaurants, upstart rock bands and heavy people finally deciding to lose weight now that they can make some extra cash in the process. Hell, I'd stop eating chocolate cakes for breakfast, too, if there was a five spot in it for me. Here, Kourtney (the little, quiet one) and Khloe (the taller, louder one) move to Miami to open the second Dash clothing store. The series promises to follow the ladies as they try to make Dash East as successful as the mother ship store in California.
That in and of itself could be an interesting topic for a reality show. But it simply wouldn't be enough for these Kardashian girls, so we're also following Khloe as she begins her life as a radio personality and tries to make her "Khloe After Dark" radio program a Miami success. The premiere episode splits its time between the two endeavors, but in doing so it prevents either from creating any real pull. I was enjoying the behind-the-scenes stuff surrounding the radio show more than the clothing store. But in both directions, whenever one thing started getting more interesting, the show would change focus to the other.
But as reality series go, there is potential. In the premiere, both the clothing store and the radio show are shown to have some problematic situations that could spell the end for either. Or both. The producers, I'm sure, are hoping these twists and turns will pull you in and keep you coming back for more. Of course, their hope relies on you watching the show in the first place. Hard to imagine there are people out there simply dying to watch Kourtney and Khloe make a success of their Miami clothing store while also trying to make a success of their lives, but there are worse things to find on TV in August. Not a lot, but a few. And, heck, I'm sure the curvy, easy-on-the-eyes Kim Kardashian will drop by for more than just the premiere episode. After all, she's the reason this show exists.
