Justin Lo grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended college and law school at Yale University. After graduation, he clerked for a federal judge and practiced as a litigator in New York City.
In 2018, Justin moved to Virginia and joined the State Corporation Commission’s Office of General Counsel where, as Senior Counsel, he is responsible for litigation and enforcement.
In addition to being a lawyer, Justin is a Virginia Press Association award-winning food writer. Since becoming the restaurant critic for the Richmond Times-Dispatch in 2019, he’s penned dozens of reviews, along with other feature stories for Virginia’s paper of record and its sister publication, En Forme magazine.
Justin also serves on various boards. He was previously appointed by the Governor to the Virginia Asian Advisory Board and served as Vice Chair of the Board and Civic Engagement Committee Chair until 2023. He’s been named by the Governor’s Office as a “Noteworthy Asian Pacific American of Virginia” and featured as a community leader for AAPI Heritage Month by the ACLU of Virginia.
His current board service includes Equality Virginia Advocates and The New Theatre at Firehouse. He and his husband Luke, a law professor at the University of Richmond, live in Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood, with their corgis Kensington and Buckingham.
