SWAT Season 7: Final Episodes' "Surprises" & Team "Friction" Teased By Shemar Moore

Summary

  • S.W.A.T star Shemar Moore teases season 7 finale doubling as both a "swan song" and "new beginning".
  • Season 7 was initially planned as the final season, but CBS has since renewed the show.
  • Moore promises an action-packed finale with helicopters, chases, and fight scenes.

S.W.A.T star Shemar Moore teases season 7's swan song, which also doubles as a new beginning after the show's unexpected renewal. The action drama series, which follows Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson (Moore) and his unit, has now surprisingly twice survived cancellation. SWAT season 7 was not originally planned to happen, only for the decision to be reversed and for it to be announced as the final season. And then, back in April, with the last episode just weeks away, CBS shifted course and announced that it was renewing S.W.A.T for season 8.

At a recent event for CBS, Moore spoke with Deadline about S.W.AT season 8's unexpected renewal. Though the lead actor mentioned that there were still three episodes left to film, he offered a preview of what sounds like a bombastic ending to season 7. In the quote below, Moore also says that the upcoming finale works both as a swan song and a new beginning:

We were smart. At the tail end of the strike, me and the producers and the writers got together at my house and I said, ‘Ok, what are we going to do this year?’ I said, ‘If this is it, let’s go out with a bang. Let’s give them our signature. Let’s give them the action: helicopters, chase scenes, motorcycle chases, fight scenes, Hondo sprinting through an alley. Let’s rock them.'

We have three episodes left to finish [airing] this season. So when you get to the finale, you’ll see we shaped it in a way that it’s either our swan song or our new beginning. We literally didn’t change anything in the writing.

Could S.W.A.T End Next Season?

Hondo faces anger and outrage, even from his own community, and this leads him to question whether he still has what it takes to be a leader.

In the finale, which is slated to premiere on May 17, it's teased that the team will face their deadliest threat yet. This happens when a violent group seeks revenge by blowing up half of Los Angeles, potentially leading thousands to lose their lives. The S.W.A.T. spin-off TV show led by Shemar Moore has accumulated several seasons so far. Here are the 10 best episodes.

There is no word yet about the future of S.W.A.T beyond the upcoming eighth season and whether it will receive a surprise renewal again. The road to the show's survival has been bumpy, although the renewal for season 8 reportedly happened smoother than the previous round of negotiations. The main issue that led to S.W.A.T season 7 being announced as the last, before the decision was reversed, was difficult negotiations between CBS and production company Sony TV over the licensing fee and budget constraints.

The licensing fee is an agreed-upon amount the network pays the production company to air the show.

According to reporting, however, negotiations between the producing partners have gone well both in terms of agreeing on a fee and working with a tighter budget. If it's the case that S.W.A.T continues being a success for all parties, there may be space for the show to snag yet another renewal.

S.W.A.T airs on Fridays at 8 PM ET on CBS.
