Listen To Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Outtake ‘Ivory Tower’ From ‘Déjà Vu’ 50th Anniversary Edition

Rhino shared Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young‘s previously unreleased outtake of “Ivory Tower.” The Stills-penned tune came from the sessions for the legendary supergroup’s landmark 1970 album, Déjà Vu, and will appear on the upcoming 50th anniversary edition set for release May 14.

The 50th anniversary edition of Déjà Vu features 38 demos, outtakes, and alternate takes, the lion’s share of which are previously unreleased. The 4-LP/CD box set also comes with the original album along with a hardcover booklet with liner notes from renowned filmmaker and rock writer Cameron Crowe.

“Déjà Vu caught the zeitgeist perfectly,” Crowe wrote in the liner notes, “[and] might just be the legendary band’s most accurate portrait of their fiery individualism. 50 years later, with the sonic aperture fully opened, it’s a wide-screen look at the big picture of Déjà Vu, with more music, including a batch of surprises, unseen photos, and a lot more clarity.”

Most of the 38 demos, outtakes and alternate tracks are previously unreleased and include the band’s first recording for the Déjà Vu sessions titled “Know You’ve Got To Run” (most likely an early take of the album’s closing track, “Everbody I Love You”) along with a demo for Crosby’s “Almost Cut My Hair,” an alternate version of Young’s “Helpless” featuring harmonica and a rendition of Nash’s “Our House” with the song’s inspirational figure, Joni Mitchell.

Rhino previewed the collection with a somewhat rare Nash and Young collaboration called “Birds” and now follow with “Ivory Tower.” While the song itself isn’t necessarily previously unheard — Stills released a version of it called “Little Miss Bright Eyes” on a later solo project — the CSNY version of it is previously unheard and came with a handy pop-up video style visual which tells the story of the song.
