Amid a defense that has seen some ups and downs in the 2023 season, sits a gem in Keli Lawson. The linebacker has been a star of Virginia Tech's 2021 signing class.

Logging 59 tackles so far, Lawson has shown serious improvement from last season and continues to prove himself on the field.

During Week 2 of the season, the Stephens City, Virginia native was named ACC Linebacker of the Week. The accolade came after an impressive game against Purdue, amassing seven solo tackles and seven assisted for a team-high 14 tackles.

When asked about his role on Tech's defense, Lawson's answer was simple.

"I believe I don't have any abnormal or outstanding role," he commented. "I just fit into the scheme of things like a puzzle piece. I do my job just like the other guys on the field."

What a puzzle piece he has been, owning the second-most tackles (59) in the ACC. Despite his humility, Lawson has made a name for himself both on Tech's defense and with the staff of The Athletic.

Before the season started, he earned a spot on Bruce Feldman's "Freak List," a compilation of the most athletic players in college football. Credited for his 82-inch wingspan and 4.6 40-yard dash, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound athlete was ranked 19th out of 101 players.

Heading into fall camp, Lawson made it clear that one of his goals for the 2023 season was to build his body, a task he has described as a "real work in progress."

"It's something you really have to invest in, put time into and make sacrifices for," he continued. "I believe it's paid off really well."

His physical improvements during the offseason have made him an integral member of the Hokies' linebacker group. Last season, Lawson had 23 tackles, a number he has doubled in just seven games so far in 2023. Part of this newfound success, he says, is credited to his coaches and teammates at Tech.

"They've played an outstanding role in really getting me accustomed to things," Lawson reflected. "They help me adjust and transition into an increased role."

Aside from an outstanding performance against Purdue, Lawson played a considerable role on the defensive end of the ball against Rutgers (11 tackles) and Marshall (12), leading the team in tackles for both games.

In Tech's final five games, they are battling for a trip to Charlotte and a bowl game. Lawson's wish is clear – to be on a winning defense.

"My main goal," Lawson explained, "is to have a chance to play for the ACC title."

Virginia Tech gears up to take on Syracuse on Thursday, Oct. 26, and Lawson will be continuing to fight and prove himself as a force of nature on this defense.
