The incredible story of Black British boxing sensation Len Johnson is set to hit the big screen in an upcoming feature film titled Champion. The film, produced by UK commercials producer MindsEye’s film and TV division, will shed light on Johnson’s remarkable journey as one of the top middleweight boxers in the 1920s and 1930s.

Despite his undeniable talent and skill in the ring, Johnson was denied the opportunity to become a British boxing champion due to the oppressive ‘colour bar’ rule that prohibited Black fighters from claiming championship status. Undeterred, Johnson fought tirelessly against this injustice, ultimately leading to the overturning of the discriminatory rule and paving the way for future Black British champions.

The project, which is based on Rob Howard’s book Boxing’s Uncrowned Champion – Len Johnson and the Colour Bar, has attracted top talent in the industry. Guy East, known for his work on Rush, Woman In Black, and The Ides of March, is on board as an executive producer, while award-winning playwright Winsome Pinnock is set to write the script.
