Amazonレビュー
Mac Rebennack's long commercial drought finally ended in the late '80s with In a Sentimental Mood, an album of pop standards bearing almost no connection to New Orleans R&B roots. His album-opening duet with Rickie Lee Jones, "Making' Whoopee," was a big hit after it was included on the Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack, and it's easy to understand why Harry Connick Jr. fans who'd bought When Harry Met Sally were seduced by this coy come-on. Still, it's odd to hear Rebennack's scruffy baritone in service to such lush, sweeping orchestration (and to hear him sing a line like "I've got a sweet tooth for your sweet heart"). The Doctor does lend a nice bluesy feel to a Satchmo favorite, "My Buddy," and to Charles Brown's classic, "Black Night," and his version of "More Than You Know" is a small miracle of understatement. --Keith Moerer

Reviewing the sound quality of Dr John’s recordings can be difficult as in some cases the masters are old or an indifferent remix/master has been done purely for commercial reasons.
This recording is a little above average being clear and well balanced. The channel separation is good and there is a reasonable degree of instrument definition. Most importantly the piano has not been swamped by the orchestration. The piano is clear, sharp and “tinkles” beautifully.
Vocals are clear, undistorted and remain at the front of the mix without sacrificing the detail of the orchestration or other instruments.
The bass and drums are a little soft but this contributes to a relaxed almost sentimental sound quality. The horns are reasonable but sometimes lack the ability to soar. Yet at other time the brass section’s phrasing is clearly audible.
The recording is a little quiet but any louder and it would probably have been compressed loosing much of the feeling and atmosphere. This is after all a turn down the lights and chill album. The sound quality of the vocals and instruments lend themselves to this purpose.
Overall the excellent orchestration does not swamp the recording but acts as an audible bridge. Care has been lavished on this recording.
