This experimental, intelligent and funny BBC comedy was produced by Ned Sherrin and entirely devoted to the inventive brilliance of Eleanor Bron and John Fortune as both writers and performers.
A series of sketches based mainly on middle-class failure in one field or another was witty, literate and very pretty to look at. If anything, too pretty to look at: the exclusive use of white and gold and the modish stills between the items tended to weaken the asperity.
Gentle, slow-developing sketches exploited the more unpleasant sides of human nature – the selfish, spoilt only son, the parasitic society woman thriving on her friends’ misfortunes, the foot fetishist. Some of them – like the frigid husband on his wedding night – were gently funny but never more than that.
