This is an album of superstars gathered to honor one of the most important bands in the blues/rock part of "the British Invasion." They had 3 guitar "gods" pass through their ranks, Clapton, Beck and Page. Beck and Page were in the ban together for a short while. When he was originally forming Led Zep, Page originally wanted to call them, "The New Yardbirds." I saw the last incarnation of the Yardbirds, and several songs later appeared on LZ's first album, most notably, :Dazed and Confused." This album could not do a better job of honoring The Yardbirds. It is rumored that Clapton, Beck, and Page are all on here, as well as Rory Gallagher.
Just to be snarky, one of the guitarists who failed his audition to replace Clapton was one Pete Townsend, who, IMHO, still needs to take guitar lessons. He's not worthy of being mentioned among these guitar greats, other than as the guy who couldn't make the cut. Sure, he's filthy rich now, bot as the saying goes, there's no accounting for taste.
Buy the album; you'll be glad you did.

1984, gave us the reformed Yardbirds, most of them anyway on The Box Of Frogs. Jeff Beck, Jim McCarty, Chris Dreja and Paul Samwell-Smith, as we all know Keith Relf died in 1976. John Fiddler of Medicine Head and the British Lions became the vocalist, very good singer. The late Rory Gallagher also helped out with great guitar and sitar on this collection. "Back Where I Started", was the first single and a hell of a start, just a great tune. "Harder", a bruising rocker. "Another Wasted Day", some sweet guitar by Rory, great tune for 1984. The strutting "Love Inside You", with Jeff Beck. "The Edge", is a smokin' tune with great slide guitar. The howl of "Two Steps Ahead" and the simple roll of "Into The Dark". "Poor Boy", great song about being one poor slob. "Nine Lives", is another name for "Two Steps Ahead". Nice release by Esoteric. Very good essay and great remastering.

I recieved this CD with great trepidation. I also bought the second album by the same band. However my fears were allayed. The recording by Cherry Red/Esoteric is brilliant. A really warm and almost vinyl sounding production of a brilliant album. The album is as brilliant as it was when I bought it back in the 80's. The playing of the band, and of a whole selection of guest artists, including Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher and Peter-John Vitesse, is excellent. If you enjoyed the Yardbirds (three members in this line-up) and love a bit of rock and blues, you'll probably love this.
Buy it and listen loud(ish).
