Ligue 1 Betting Tips

Take a look below for the top handpicked France Ligue 1 prediction for three of this week's matches.

When betting on Ligue 1, just like any other of the big leagues in Europe, there are many bookies you can go through but two in particular have great offers, notably through the bet365 bonus code or the William Hill sign up promo code.

Lorient vs Clermont: Clermont To Win @ 10/3 (4.33)

We start our Ligue 1 predictions with the clash between the bottom two and whilst neither team are in good form the value bet is definitely for Clermont to take the three points. Lorient have lost seven straight games heading into this match whilst Clermont at least collected five points in the same period of time. That's obviously not a great return but the odds and the fact they've won the last two head to head meets make this a worthwhile wager.

Metz vs PSG: PSG To Win @ 3/5 (1.60)

This game sees Champions PSG travel to relegation threatened Metz and, in truth, there should only be one outcome, which is PSG to win. Metz have lost three of their last four home matches whilst they've won just three of their last 10 in all competitions. PSG meanwhile have won eight of their last 10 away games. PSG have won their last six head to head games at Metz stadium too.

Reims vs Rennes: Draw @ 23/10 (3.30)

We end our Ligue 1 predictions with a draw tip as Reims host Rennes. There are only two points between these two midtable sides and the form guide doesn't put much between them either hence this looks like good value. Reims have taken seven points from their last 15 available at home. Rennes meanwhile have taken seven points from their last five league away games.

Ligue 1 Odds: Top Goalscorer

Kylian Mbappe's days at PSG are surely numbered, with Liverpool and Real Madrid amongst the Frenchman's rumoured destinations as his contract runs down. He is the runaway top scorer for 2023/24, and – assuming no long-term injuries – it is just a question of the margin by which he will emerge as this season's top gun, en-route to setting a new outright record of six Ligue 1 top scorer awards.

However, there is still the small matter of breaking Josip Skoblar's record for the most goals in a Ligue 1 campaign (44 in 1970/71). Yet, with the season now past its halfway point, Mbappe needs to up his scoring rate in order to even match that.

Current Odds:

  • Kylian Mbappe @ 1/80
  • Wissam Ben Yedder @ 25/1
  • Alexandre Lacazette @ 25/1

What is Ligue 1, and How Does It Work?

Ligue 1 is the top men's football league in France, and along with La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and the Premier League, it is one of Europe's ‘big five' leagues. Teams who get relegated from Ligue 1 play in Ligue 2. The top 18 French teams compete for the title of Champion of France, and the league runs from August to May each season.

Each team participating in Ligue 1 plays a total of 34 matches, facing each team twice (home and away). The format of the league follows the same format other major European leagues follow, and the team who gets the most points in Ligue 1 gets crowned champion. There are no playoffs, such as those seen in leagues like the American MLS.

Some of the top matchups include:

Ligue 1 trivia

  • When was Ligue 1 founded? The top division in France dates back to 1930 but it has only been known as Ligue 1 since 2002
  • Which player has the most Ligue 1 appearances? Goalkeeper Mickael Landreau has played 618 times in Ligue 1 for such clubs as Nantes, PSG, Lille and Bastia
  • Who has scored the most Ligue 1 goals? Dello Innis has 299 Ligue 1 goals, mostly coming during his time at Monaco in the 1970s

Our Final Conclusion

Season after season, the most likely winner is Paris Saint-Germain. However, Lille did win the title as recently as 2021, showing that nothing is certain in this league. And while the 2021/22 title race was PSG's by a 15-point landslide, a fast-flowing Rennes (with a finish of 4th) also caught the eye with an incredible 82-goal tally that nobody beneath the champions came anywhere near to matching.

And in the 2022/23 campaign, Lens also had a star turn by finishing as ‘best of the rest' behind PSG, just three years after being promoted from Ligue 2. While they haven't been able to emulate that this term, the sight of the Stade Bollaert-Delelis hosting Champions League football in the autumn – especially after such a long wait – was nothing short of romantic even for neutral fans.

Could the likes of Rennes, Lens or Lille go again? In truth, PSG's kingdom depends on their future ability to adequately replace the likes of Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and Neymar, who have been devastating alongside Mbappe in recent years. One thing is for sure – there's never a dull moment in Ligue 1!
