- The 10-episode series will air weekly after a two-episode premiere, leading to the finale on April 23, 2024.
- Shōgun's episodes will be available to stream on Hulu.
FX’s highly anticipated Shōgun series will air from February through April, making it the second TV adaptation of James Clavell’s best-selling novel of the same name. Almost five decades after NBC’s record-breaking Shōgun, the tale of John Blackthorne’s arrival in Japan at the end of the 16th century, which itself was loosely based on the true story of English navigator William Adams, is getting a new adaptation in the form of a limited series. The Shōgun reviews have praised several aspects of FX’s new limited series, from the cultural sensibility to the scope and the scale of it.
Despite Shōgun’s Game of Thrones comparisons, the new FX series falls more into the historical drama genre, even though its characters are only partially based on real people and real events. FX’s Shōgun was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, with the latter serving as showrunner alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Kondo. Shōgun’s impressive cast is led by Hiroyuki Sanada (also a producer) as Yoshii Toranaga, and it also stars Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne and Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko.
Shogun Review: FX's Action-Packed, Engrossing Historical Drama Is Your Next Must-Watch
Shōgun should be a priority watch, as it dazzles us with political intrigue, culture, and an intensity that brings everything together nicely.
Shogun's Finale Releases April 23, 2024
Following its two-episode premiere on February 27, Shōgun will air its remaining episodes weekly for eight weeks. Therefore, Shōgun’s finale will air on April 23, 2024. FX’s epic historical drama will also be available to stream on Hulu, with episodes arriving on the platform on the same day they are broadcast. Considering Shōgun is being described as a limited series, the finale will most likely be a definitive ending to the story. As a comparison, NBC’s Shōgun from 1980 originally aired across five nights from September 15 to September 19.
Shogun Has 10 Episodes In Total
FX’s Shōgun will have 10 hour-long episodes, with the first two premiering on February 27 and the other eight releasing one per week. Despite having twice as many episodes as the 1980 Shōgun mini-series, FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s novel will have a total runtime relatively close to that of the previous show. Each episode of NBC’s Shōgun ranged from 120 to 180 minutes long, with the series having a total runtime of 12 hours. Shōgun episode 10, which premiers on April 23, 2024, will be the limited series’ finale.
Shogun's Full Episode Release Schedule
Shōgun’s first two episodes air on FX and arrive on Hulu in the US on February 27, 2024. A new episode of Shōgun will be released every week on FX and Hulu for eight weeks, with the limited series concluding on April 23. Shōgun’s streaming schedule applies to other regions, although on different platforms. Latin American countries will have access to the show through Star+, with other territories receiving it through Disney+. The complete release schedule for Shōgun’s episodes is as follows:
