Songfacts®:

  • Barry Manilow has something in common with Adele. Long before the British songstress resolved to find a new partner who was just like her old one on the hit "Someone Like You," Manilow shared the sentiment on this tune, where he sings to an old flame:

    If I should love again
    If I find someone new
    It would be make-believe
For in my heart, it would be you
  • Manilow called If I Should Love Again, his eighth studio album, the most romantic album he ever made. He said: "I was so caught up in romance that I actually wrote music and lyrics to the title song while playing the piano facing the ocean, in a rented house on the beach in Atlantic City, New Jersey."
  • The album yielded two chart-topping singles on the Adult Contemporary chart: "The Old Songs" and "Somewhere Down The Road."
  • This was the first of Manilow's own albums that he produced himself without the help of Ron Dante, who'd co-produced all of his previous albums. In the meantime, Dante helmed Irene Cara's debut album, Anyone Can See.
