Peoples Square/Nanjing Road East - Prostitution - Warning

Both my husband and I were completely unprepared for the level of prostitution in Shanghai around Peoples Square and Nanjing Road East. We had read about Shanghai, looked on tripadvisor etc. and there was very little about it besides men alone might be approached. Nothing could have prepared us for what we saw.

It wasn't just direct approaches from pimps/prostitutes but also the sight of seeing sex tourism operating. My husband was asked for sex constantly and this began as early as 6 p.m. (admittedly this mostly happened when I wasn't with him - but not every single guy is going to be happy being approached for sex when he's wandering about looking for a place to eat dinner). Frankly (and living in a city myself and being aware of what goes on in parts of cities) I might have expected this kind of acvtivity from 11 p.m. onwards not from 6 p.m. The 'approaches' also ranged from lacklustre calling out to direct hassling and being followed to being physically grabbed by a pimp. The physical nature of some of the approaches was threatening and disturbing. My husband is only 28 and we have travelled a lot but we have never encountered this before unless we (1) knew we were entering a red light district e.g. Amsterdam or (2) wandered around central areas late at night - after midnight e.g. New York. We have never expereinced being physically grabbed before either. We appreciate that Peoples Square and environs are central and there are malls, transport hubs, restaurants etc. there but we will never go back as the sex scene is far too blatant and aggressive. We moved on to a hotel in the French Concession and my husband was not hassled for sex again and we had a far more pleasant time. Of course, I am sure there is prostitution in the French Concession as well but it was more discrete and less 'in your face'. Possibly the worst sights though were seeing the 60+ year old Western men with much much younger non-Western women (very clearly not wives or daughters) entering our first hotel prior to our move to the French Concession. One guy with his 2 girls in the lift really made me feel ill. This was a 5 star luxury hotel in the centre of town - not some seedy flea pit of motel in the red light district of Amsterdam. With Shanghai I think the whole of the area around Peoples Square/Nanjing Road East is a red light district and I would exercise extreme caution over where you stay and what you do in Shanghai if you want to avoid being approached or witness sex tourism operating. Consider other central areas e.g. French Concession for a trip with less sex for sale.

Hi CocoaBelle,

I am sorry you were so upset.

East Nanjing Road between Peoples Square and the Bund is like Times Square in New York City as recently as the 80s.

If you had been reading the TripAdvisor Forum threads on Shanghai, you must have been unlucky to not read my many frequent comments about this area.

Everyone says, "I want to stay near the Bund," and I say, "Why?" People do not know the answer to that, just that they are programmed to say it.

This area is what I call tourist town, and not in a complementary way. The scammers, the very aggressive touts and yes, prostitution in the form of many offers of personal massage are notorious. The stores are geared to Chinese and foreign tourists with correspondingly high prices. You might meet honest people trying to practice English, but you also will be subjected to the tearoom and art gallery scams as well as the pure obnoxiousness of men and women selling something, including women.

I would rather stay near the Suzhou Creek (Astor) north of the Bund, near YuYuan (Renaissance) or Xuhui (Asset) than on that strip of pedestrial pavement.

Until the government cleans this area up, which would be very very easy in China, avoid it for hotels. Let the tour groups house their customers in the midst of nasty people and have wise TripAdvisor readers stay elsewhere.

Shanghai is a wonderful thriving city. Please do visit Peoples Park, including the west side which many miss. Walk along East Nanjing Road, prepared to ignore virtually everyone who says anything to you, to get to the seawall now being refurbished along the Huangpu River (the famously overpromoted Bund). Take the tourist tunnel for a bit of overpriced tourist glitz to get to the other side, Pudong, or better yet take a ferry.

But just don't stay here to see this crap all the time.

Wow. I have been looking forward to visiting Shanghai next month and staying at the Royal Meridien as the location seems perfect. Now I'm not so sure.

The scammers/pros.normally come out at night at Nanjing http://donglu.Pros.solicitations r usually done by the pimps where upon they will bring u to the place.Normally the pros.themselves will not do the soliciting here.Except forscammers like learning english n tea drinking etc. They wont be out in the day time.Ignore them completely n nuthin bad will happen n u will still enjoy Nanjing donglu.Besides u will not be spending yr whole trip on this particular street.Le Meridien has a front entrance fronting JiuJiang lu., n the back entrance on Nanjing donglu.Still its a good place to stay considering its closeness to shopping, metro, food.Maybe i have not much of the pros./scammers menace as im a chinese but i will advise u not to think that Shanghai is generally a flesh city. Its actually to the contrary as its a huge bustling city with a lot of serious businesses goin on.

I'm shocked.. stayed at Le Royal Meridian for 6 night at the start of august and it was fantastic... to lazy to wake up early so I was out till very late most nights... had one approach said no, shared a joke and that was it! Never approached when with my wife...

If compared with some other countries e.g. bangkok where you get approached all the time and in front of wife/girlfriends etc shanghai didn't seem that bad to me.

Hi DrJonesss,i agree with u.I had stayed at LeRoyal Meridien n the few hotels nearby like Central or Ramada n i never had any serious problems with the http://pros.syndicate.Once a while a pimp might come to offer but they soon left when i dont show any interest at all.Problems may occur only if u r undecided n begin to show some interest. The problem of pros.,after staying numerous times aound Nanjing donglu is probably overblown out of proportions to give an impression that the whole street is full of pros.I would say that in certain parts of other world cities pros.is even more rampant n parading their business is quite legalised like in Geylang,Singapore or in many parts of Bangkok n VN.There,of cos the pros.do not really disturb u as they will be seated at the shop entrances n waiting for clients. Its done in the open. However in Shanghai this thing is still done discreetly.I definately oppose prostitution but i certainly dont believe that this part of Shanghai is too bad to stay at n to enjot human watching, shopping n food.

Hey Benny,

i don't know what it is - they can spot me a mile away -- some people say it is because i always look like a first-time tourist. So for me the streets are always full of pimps, pros and scammers:-(

though it was very kind of you to notice and comment on my stunningly handsome movie star looks.

You know I am often told I look like.... shrek:-)
