Robert Mitchum stars as a down-and-out ex-cop whose entanglement with a shady casino owner leaves him one step behind a killer in the mystery One Shoe Makes It Murder. Soon after the Nevada Gaming Commission suspends his casino license, gambling czar Carl Charnock (Mel Ferrer) hires private investigator Harold Schillman (Mitchum) to find his missing wife. With the help of Fay Reid (Angie Dickinson), Schillman locates the unfaithful spouse--right before she falls from a balcony! Now Schillman must determine whether she jumped or ... whether One Shoe Makes It Murder.

Somewhere between Phillip Marlowe and Jack Spanner, Robert Mitchum flexed his gumshoe for Harold Shillman – a former cop who doesn’t even have a private investigator licence.
In William Hale’s adaptation of Eric Bercovici’s So Little Cause for Caroline, Shillman is tasked by a casino owner with tracking down his wife; the job is easy, but no sooner does he find her than she falls off a balcony. Pretty good TV Movie with Robert Mitchum as a rumpled private eye hired to find the missing wife of this rich casino magnate. He finds her but right after finding her she takes a fall out the window of the hotel room which was on the sixth or seventh floor. Mitchum's in the phone booth outside telling the husband where she is, and the homicide detective in charge notes that she has one shoe on, and one shoe off. The shoe that was off was found by the bed and it's approximately 7 feet from the bed to the window-so the detective reasons "If she was gonna throw herself out the window, then why did she take her shoe off?"…

Really good TV movie with Robert Mitchum playing a washed out cop hired to find someone's missing wife. He's hired specifically because he's neither a cop nor a professional private detective, but an uncurious nobody with the skills to track down his target without getting too curious about it. Not long after he finds the woman though, he sees her fall to her death from a balcony apartment and the police are convinced it was a murder. She left a shoe in the apartment when she fell, which doesn't make sense if she jumped on purpose. It looks more like maybe she was dragged to the balcony and pushed. One shoe, you see, makes it murder.

People do not get Mitchum AT ALL. This is a terrific performance. He plays a deeply depressed suicidal man, and reviewers wonder why he shows no emotion. He is low key because of the character's mental state, not because Mitchum is not giving it his all. The character is a man who has given up and Mitchum conveys that beautifully. You really believe him when he says, "Lady, I don't feel ANYWAY. " To all the bad reviewers: give it a second chance and watch Mitchum do his thing.

By this time Robert Mitchum was as much monolith as man. His face carved in stone and set in place. If he tried to smile it would crack. But he still manages to take up space and have presence in the same way as a John Wayne or Gary Cooper did. He was still making good films like The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Yakuza, Farewell, My Lovely and he was soon to play Pugs in The Winds of War. His one neutral expression was all he needed. Im trying to finish the World of escape to Robert Mitchum films, he is my favorite golden age actor, so I’m finishing his tv stuff, I’m not sure imbd or Wikipedia is the same in finding out everything an actor has done, but I’m using wiki, so this is the first watching, in a day that rainy, and Christmas Day 2021, but I will propbably binge his TV movies since, I want to be done with his world, and venture to new ones.
