Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

For over half a century The Columbia Encyclopedia has occupied an unparalleled place among the great books of the world as the preeminent one-volume encyclopedia. Hailed for its unmatchable scope and its reputation for accuracy and authority, The Columbia Encyclopedia is also lauded as a miracle of condensation, offering a perfect balance of scholarship and brevity that makes it ideal for home or office use. The new sixth edition continues a tradition of excellence& mdash;encompassing discoveries, crises, and other events--into the twenty-first century, while maintaining comprehensive coverage of centuries past. Whether your questions focus on the physical, historical, geographical, political, scientific, religious, or cultural dimensions of previous centuries or on today's headlines in areas such as technology, health, and alternative medicine, The Columbia Encyclopedia should be the first work you consult.

The largest one-volume encyclopedia available, this desk reference includes more than 50,000 articles that marshal more than 6.5 million words. Nearly 1,300 new entries are presented, and almost 40% of the existing entries are revised for this edition. In addition, there are more than 40,000 bibliographical citations, 80,000 cross references, and 700 line drawings.

But sheer volume is not what makes The Columbia Encyclopedia so popular. More than just a compendium of facts, it delivers knowledge, enlightenment, and yes, even entertainment. Perceptive, concise, and at times even witty, it remains the best one-volume encyclopedia in any language.

This encyclopedia is larger than the Pacific Ocean in terms of material to look for. I had the best deal on Amazon. Goodwill folks are trying to stay humble in rating this one in 'Good' condition but it is nothing less than brand new.

This is one of my favorite books to pick up when I have some free time, and I want to settle my brain. I love reading random facts and information... I can open up this book to just about any page, and learn something totally new-to-me. It's a sturdy book, too. Something a few inches out of your grasp? Need to clonk some bandits over the head? This baby will do the trick too. The Columbia Encyclopedia is the gift (to myself) that keeps on giving!

I have several "desk encyclopedias" consisting of a single volume, but this one is undoubtedly and by far the best. True, the typeface is small, but I would recommend, spend a couple extra bucks for a magnifying glass. It'll be well worth it.

I am not a Luddite in the least. But still, as I get older I appreciate the stability of printed text. It is all too easy to change content online subtly and surreptitiously. Finally, I have read articles in this encyclopedia on topics that I know pretty well and still have learned things. A gem and a treasure.

I needed an updated version for reference to my hobby of crossword puzzles. The book is terrific and a good value

I wanted a book with a bit more information than a dictionary, with names of people and a bit more depth for concepts, and this proved perfect. It's a bit large, but not that big and has nearly everything. And its quicker to check if I'm reading and don't want to move to go sign on to Wikipedia. Besides, it can be browsed.

I just got this book today and was astonished. Printed in 2000 and bought in 2020 second-hand for a few dollars 20 USD. I fell in love with it.

A hefty tomb of a book; jam packed full of information. Prompt delivery considering that it came all the way from Mishawaka in the United States and the postage, at just £2.80 is astounding!
