referencing Outer Limits (LP, Album, Stereo) ST 2044
Released in December 1963, Outer Limits is the first Capitol release credited to Jerry Cole and his Spacemen.
'Outer Limits' is an eerie surf cover of the title tune from the TV show. 'The Strut' may be better known as 'Night Rumble' from the later Surf Age. The Surfaris' 'Wipeout' gets a spectacular remake. Another track that would later grace the aforementioned album, 'One Color Blues', features an early overdriven guitar. The liberties taken with the Chantays' 'Pipeline' neither harm nor distract the listening experience here. 'Sukiyaki' is a surf cover of Kyu Sakamoto's chart-topping non-English hit, which became a surprise smash in 1963. 'Midnight Surfer' is just about the quintessential surf instrumental. 'Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow' is rather unnecessary, though it's incessant reverb wins in the end. Another Surfaris tune, 'Point Panic,' is another highlight. A faithful cover of the Champs' 'Tequila' (a single on which Cole originally performed) makes for a solid album closer.
Outer Limits is an extremely solid album, and while consisting of mainly covers, it's well worth seeking out.
