There is still uncertainty about whether he will be kept or not but the franchise has made it clear that he will be returning to competitive cricket after a long injury layoff.

Delhi Capitals are the perennial underachievers of the IPL. As Delhi Daredevils, they stumbled in the semi-finals in the first two seasons, and then crashed out in the playoffs in 2012 and 2019. They entered the final for the first time in 2020, where they lost to Mumbai Indians. They made it almost as far in 2021 too, topping the table in the league stage, but then lost both their playoff clashes to crash out.

In December 2018 the franchise was rebranded as Delhi Capitals, and the change of name seemed to bring a change of fortunes too. They made the playoffs in 2019, and in 2020, reached the final for the first time with a largely young team. In 2021, they made the playoffs again after finishing top of the league table.

Delhi Capitals will take on Punjab Kings in their season opener in an away game on March 23.
