      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Kubrick's Lolita adapts its seemingly unadaptable source material with a sly comedic touch and a sterling performance by James Mason that transforms the controversial novel into something refreshingly new without sacrificing its essential edge.

Variety Staff Variety An occasionally amusing but shapeless film. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Where Nabokov was witty, Kubrick is sometimes merely snide, but fine performances (particularly from Peter Sellers, as the ominous Clare Quilty) cover most of the rough spots. May 8, 2007 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out Far more satisfying than his later works (one hesitates to call them mere movies). Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Pauline Kael Partisan Review The surprise of Lolita is how enjoyable it is: it’s the first new American comedy since those great days in the 1940’s when Preston Sturges recreated comedy with verbal slapstick. Sep 11, 2023 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Essentially, Kubrick uses Nabokov’s story, and sexual fixation in general, for a meditation on people driven mad by what they can’t have. Rated: A Aug 30, 2022 Full Review Dwight MacDonald Esquire Magazine Lolita is a disappointment because we have a right to expect more from Kubrick (he may come through with his next, which I am told is to be a satirical treatment of the nuclear "defense" problem). Yash B Stanley Kubrick always showed his creativity with his films, and "Lolita" continues this trend. This movie tells a bizarre yet fascinating story that brings a lot of solid ideas together. The movie has a comedic side I didn't expect and the story is presented in a way where it kept my interest. The film is a bit long and sometimes I do feel like it is noticeable but the actors keep it engaging. Also sometimes the movie is pretty uncomfortable, and while that is probably the point, it is hard to get used to it at any point. Overall, I liked this movie and while it isn't among Kubrick's best films, it is still a good showcase of his ambition and storytelling. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Montgomery M Humbert Humbert is the funniest name Ive ever heard. I dont feel like speaking on the subject matter of this movie. I do think it is a well made, good film though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/12/23 Full Review CodyZamboni I didn't know this was a comedy. Sue Lyons is a stunner. But, the usually realiable Peter Sellers, fails here. His schtick was way over the top, not funny, and really took me out of the movie. But James Mason nails his part. Sad, tragic, and fully aware of the consequences of his life decisions. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/29/23 Full Review Cees T Too longwinded and overacted. Should be 30 minutes shorter. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/14/23 Full Review Michael V HOW DID THEY EVER MAKE A MOVIE OF … Lolita is a 1962 psychological comedy-drama film directed by Stanley Kubrick 👧🏼 Meh, it passed the time. Just. 😐 👍🏼👎🏼 As much as I enjoyed the first half of the movie, the second half was far too long and dragged, considering the minimal plot… Humbert Humbert is a middle-aged British novelist who is both appalled by and attracted to the vulgarity of American culture. When he comes to stay at the boarding house run by Charlotte Haze, he soon becomes obsessed with Lolita, the woman's teenaged daughter.
