Washington County, Florida Sheriff’s Office Dive Team Retrieve Body of Fatal Shooting Victim from Water in Vernon on April 27, 2024

On April 27, 2024 at 2:41 p.m., Washington County Communications Center received a 911 call in reference to an altercation at Diamond Head Fish Camp, located on Moss Hill Road in Vernon.  Caller stated that the altercation was between her husband and another individual.

Once deputies and investigators arrived on scene, all parties involved were still present. Investigators were informed that all three men had been on the lake fishing and consuming alcohol most of the day.  Once back at the dock, one party became aggressive and threated to kill one of the other individuals.  The altercation became physical between two parties and a firearm was produced, leading to one individual being shot and killed.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was activated and retrieved the body from the water.

Law enforcement is still on scene and the investigation is still ongoing.  The 14th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Medical Examiner’s Office is currently assisting in the investigation of this case.  At this time, no charges have been filed.
