Sweet Caroline (Good Times Never Seemed So Good) / Dig In
  • "Neil Diamond titled one of his albums Three Chord Opera - a title that succinctly sums up his modus operandi. A graduate of the Brill Building songwriting factory, his early hits were tight, two-and-a-half minute slices of pure pop that are held in even higher regard now than they were when they first hit the charts. But even then, his dramatic voice gave his songs a gravity that was almost operatic in tone. This was fine as long he was applying his voice to great songs like "Solitary man" or "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon". But his songwriting eventually got cheesy as the strings got increasingly overbearing. There were occasional signs of life in the '80s and '90s, but he didn't completely find the plot again until he hooked up with Rick Rubin (rock music's Certified Career Saver) for 12 Songs. Neil Diamond has been called many things - 'The King of Housewife Rock' and 'The Jewish Elvis', to name two - but he is also one of the relatively few people in popular music to whom the word 'legend' actually applies."
  • Biography

Brookyn-born singer-songwriter who first achieved success when The Monkees sold 6 million copies of their cover of "I'm a Believer" in 1966. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Lulu scored a big hit with her version of Diamond's "The Boat That I Row." The stage was now set for a string of hits he recorded himself: from "Cherry Cherry" and "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" (later a hit for Urge Overkill) in the 60's through to "America" and "Heartlight" in the early 80's. Career highlights in between include an impressive performance on The Last Waltz; the title duet on You Don't Bring Me Flowers with Barbra Streisand; and his feature film debut, costarring with Laurence Olivier in the 1980 remake of The Jazz Singer.

Diamond continues to draw large audiences to his concert appearances and maintains a sizable, if aging, fanbase who continue to swoon for his unique brand of smouldering sensuality.
