We’ve got a stellar lineup of speakers for next weekend’s graduation ceremony! 🎓

Eastman is thrilled to welcome revered composer and ESM alumna Maria Schneider ’85E (MM) to the podium alongside student speakers Rey Sunglao ’24E (MM) and Kayla Sconiers ’24E. All three will address graduates and attendees at 9:00 AM on Saturday, May 18 in Kodak Hall.

We also want to congratulate Maria—who has won seven Grammy awards among her many other accolades—for being chosen by the University of Rochester to receive an honorary Doctor of Music degree, bestowed at the University-wide Commencement on Friday, May 17 at 9:00 AM in Fauver Stadium (on River Campus).

Join us this Saturday, May 11, from 1:00-5:00 PM in Kilbourn Hall for the 42nd annual Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition! This final round of competition will feature six outstanding singer-pianist teams of students.

Our eminent guest adjudicators for the Kneisel competition are baritone Tyler Duncan and pianist Erika Switzer. They will also give a masterclass in song repertoire on Friday, May 10 at 7:00 PM in Hatch Recital Hall.

The competition and masterclass are free and open to the public. Both will be livestreamed at esm.rochester.edu/live ✨ We hope that you can join us for these exciting events!

STUDENT NEWS | Congratulations to Bells n’ Roses — a horn quartet including Morgan Chalmers, Aliceyn Covington, Lea Helsel and Alina Liebschner, from the studio of Peter Kurau and with chamber coaching by Maura McCune Corvington — for winning this year’s brass concerto competition!

As winners, they were featured on a performance of the Schumann ‘Konzertstucke for Four Horns and Orchestra’ with the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra in April. Following the concert they were met at the stage door by a crowd of supportive friends and family! (Photos & video captured by Yujen Tsai)

The Eastman Philharmonia and Eastman-Rochester Cho

The Eastman Philharmonia and Eastman-Rochester Chorus present their final performance of the season TOMORROW! On Friday, May 3 at 7:30 PM in Kodak Hall these ensembles will come together to perform two grand masterworks of the twentieth century: Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem” (1936) and Francis Poulenc’s “Gloria” (1959).

We asked Dr. Jerry Blackstone, one of three choral professors who joined us this semester while Dr. William Weinert is on academic leave, and doctoral student Colin Mann ’18E (MM), to share more about the concert with us.

Five-time Emmy Award-winner Jeff Beal ‘85E returns to Eastman on Monday, May 6 to present a solo piano concert!

Join Beal in Hatch Recital Hall at 7:30 PM as he performs his meditative and rich “New York Études,” ten new works for solo piano. This event is free & open to the public.

Beal shares that the Eastman community is “incredibly important” to him. “It is always a joy and honor to return to teach, perform and witness the immense talents of our faculty and students.“

Last week Eastman gathered in Howard Hanson Hall to discuss part one of @urochester’s “Live the Six” movement: STOP HATE. END RACISM. CHOOSE L.O.V.E. (Live Our Values Everywhere)

Dr. Crystal Sellers Battle, ESM’s associate dean of equity and inclusion, facilitated the “STOP HATE” session by initiating conversation around identifying hate and how it manifests in our daily work.

Though the topic at hand was a heavy one, there was a real sense of joy and community on campus that day… seeing so many faculty, staff, and students join together around a common cause (and in the same shirts!) was inspiring.

Q: What sparked your interest in singing and how has your background inspired you as a performer?

A: Singing has always been part of my life as I grew up—whether in church, in school, or just singing along to songs I was hearing on the radio. Most of the time I just wasn’t able to get songs out of my head and I’d just continue to sing them. What really sparked my interest in classical music as a whole was going to see and hear the @rocphils on a school field trip when I was either in kindergarten or first grade. Something about that experience made me overjoyed about music, and this began my descent into singing and playing instruments.

DEAN APPOINTMENT | Alumnus Kate Sheeran ’02E, an

DEAN APPOINTMENT | Alumnus Kate Sheeran ’02E, an accomplished educator and academic administrator, professional musician, and executive director of Kaufman Music Center in New York City, has been named the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean of the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music. Provost David Figlio announced Sheeran’s appointment, which is effective July 15.

“I am deeply honored to take on the role of dean of the Eastman School of Music,” says Sheeran. “It is a place I truly love, and that has helped to shape me as a musician, leader, and person. I look forward to working with the Eastman and University communities and with the city of Rochester to lead Eastman into the future. We are going to do great things together!”

FACULTY APPOINTMENT: COMPOSITION | Eastman School

FACULTY APPOINTMENT: COMPOSITION | Eastman School of Music is excited to welcome Evis Sammoutis as Associate Professor of Composition this August!

Sammoutis is a multi-award-winning composer, receiving numerous international accolades throughout his career, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Award (UK) and the Irino Prize (Japan). His music has been commissioned and performed in more than 45 countries by leading festivals, ensembles, and orchestras. He served as an elected member of the International Music Council Executive Board and was most recently Associate Professor of Composition and Director of the Electronic Music Studios at Ithaca College.

“I am deeply honored to be joining the distinguished composition faculty at the Eastman School of Music this fall,” Sammoutis states. “I look forward to collaborating with my new colleagues and engaging with the gifted composition students as they forge their own personal composition voice and style to make their mark on the world.”

ALUMNI NEWS | Please join us on May 1 and 2, 2024 as we welcome two distinguished alumni back to our hallowed halls! The Eastman Wind Ensemble will feature the celebrated conductor and composer Jeff Tyzik ’73E, ’77E (MM) and famed saxophonist Alexa Tarantino ’14E at 7:30 PM on May 1 in Kodak Hall. The following day, Eastman’s Chamber Jazz Ensemble welcomes Tarantino to the Kilbourn Hall stage at 7:30 PM on May 2.

Their visit largely centers on the unveiling of new compositions, penned by each of them, premiered and recorded over the course of these two concerts.

FACULTY APPOINTMENT: CELLO | Eastman School of Mus

FACULTY APPOINTMENT: CELLO | Eastman School of Music excitedly shares that alumnus Joseph Johnson ’95E has been appointed as Associate Professor of Cello, returning to Rochester this fall!

Johnson, Principal Cellist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 2009, describes this appointment as “a full-circle moment.” “As an alum of Eastman, this school holds a special place in my heart, and I am honored to be returning ‘home’ to where my career started.”

A gifted and inspiring teacher, Johnson is currently Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of Toronto and frequently spends time coaching and conducting masterclasses at other leading music institutions. He has been heard throughout the world as a soloist and chamber musician, as well.

Eastman will join the worldwide observance of Yom

Eastman will join the worldwide observance of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) by presenting its annual concert titled “A Time to Remember…” on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 7:30 PM in Kilbourn Hall. The concert features music written by those who perished or survived the World War II concentration and work camps, as well as music written in tribute to those who died, curated by Wegman Family Professor of Violin Renée Jolles.

Jolles launched this series of annual concerts in 2014 as a tribute to her father, Jerome Jolles — a virtuoso accordion player, piano teacher, and composer who buried bodies as part of a work detail in Romania during the Nazi occupation.

“My father was the kind of Holocaust survivor who rarely spoke about his wartime experiences. Rather, he encouraged us to look toward a bright future filled with love, humor and hope.”
