One Of His Most Underrated Fusion Albums
His 70’s fusion period is often overlooked because of how great his 60’s catalog is, but it shouldn’t.

This feels more like his 60’s stuff anyway, the fusion feel isn’t super present, it’s subtle. Honestly, only the opener & closer give me the hint that this is a fusion record. This is a brisk listen too, being only 34 minutes long.

The middle two pieces, “In A Mist” & “The Godfather”, feel like pretty standard, but good post-bop. The textures that these pieces have are fantastic, especially the former. The latter doesn’t feel too texturally defined until the end, when the layers start to add on.

“Povo” & “Sky Dive” are the two fusion pieces here, identified mostly by Jarrett’s Fender Rhodes(?) & Carter’s funky bass. The former is the best piece out of all 4 tracks, it has a wide variety of instruments that all get a chance to shine.

As I was reading up on this, I saw that Rolling Stone gave this a 1/5. I have no idea why, but that gives me more reason to dislike Rolling Stone (more than I already do).

8/10

I was a tad spoiled first hearing Povo on Hubbard and Turrentine's Live Volume 1 because it destroys the studio cut which leads off this album. That's not to say that it still doesn't get my head nodding - that bass line is gonna funk you up no matter what. Freddie, George Benson, Hubert Laws and Keith Jarret (solid line up) all get nice workouts but it was Turrentine's sax (especially the call and response work) that really made that Live version an essential track for me. I still love the studio track and at nearly half the length of the live version you can get your groove on if you are deprived of time.

In a Mist reflects on it's name but not in a good way. The ideas seem foggy and the big band arrangement adds a cinematic quality but nothing really happens until the end where the band literally sounds like it sizzles out.

We flip over the disc and are greeted with Freddie doing the iconic notes from The Godfather. It's a little campy but I love it. What I love more though, is Ron Carter after doing his rendition of the famous notes. I don't really know why but it cracks me up. They end up ramping up the tempo and we get to hear a nice little jazz workout before we samba into the next track. Sky Dive puts percussionists Ray Baretto and Airto to work which adds to the Latin ambiance. It's commercial latin jazz fusion from an early 70's CTI release - not everyone's cup of tea but it sits nicely with me.

3.5/5 for a fine CTI release. I mean, it's Freddie Hubbard and the guy hits all the right notes for me.

'Povo' is the highlight on this album, after I heard it in a mixcloud mix, I had to rush out and listen to this album, not to mention I love Freddie Hubbard. This track has a slow funky soul infused vibe, Freddie Hubbard really shines on this opener, as well as George Benson on guitar. And 'Povo' is the longest track on the album, so that makes it even better. And the last track 'Sky Dive' is a close second, with some fine solo work from, guitar, flute, trumpet, keyboards. This jazz fusion album is laid back, kind of like soundtrack music in a way, nothing ever jarring, a consistent vibe throughout. A great line up of musicians, Ray Barretto, Airto, Billy Cobham (making the percussion on this album very good), add Ron Carters bass to that, with Hubert Laws, Keith Jarrett, George Benson, and others. Like I said, its kind of like a movie soundtrack in places, with the need of a big group to pull it off, easy music to travel to, all in your head of course or in a vehicle. Rudy Van Gelder is the engineer, that's always a good sign.

Another all star Hubbard release, and I be digging it for sure. Kind of fusion, kind of funky, but rolling strong all the way through the four pieces. Includes Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Keith Jarrett, Hubert Laws etc.
