Yesterday was a moment for reflecting on the enormity of what lay ahead for all those young men packed into their ships and aircraft this time 80 years before. Speaking at last night's D-Day vigil at the Commonwealth cemetery in Bayeux, the Princess quoted the memoirs of Sub-Lieutenant Keith Symons, the uncle of her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. At the age of just 20, his job was to lead three landing craft in the first assault on Gold Beach come dawn. 'Everyone was quite subdued, but it was all very matter-of-fact,' he had written. 'After supper we sat around making light conversation and listening to the chaplain playing his violin.

Indeed, William is set to be an usher at the event, which is also set to be attended by dozens of mutual friends, some of whom are no longer on speaking terms with the Duke of Sussex .

'Sex scenes? I had to get really plastered beforehand!' In a blisteringly candid interview, DAME JOAN COLLINS describes her career in the age MeToo forgot, how she still loves to get squiffy - and her fury that she doesn't get a State pension
How complicated sex scenes are these days. They are, rightly, all about consent and comfort for the actors but must still fulfil the vision of the director - hence the presence of the 'intimacy co-ordinator' on set. It makes you wonder how movie stars got through them back in the day. Step forward Dame Joan Collins , no less, to clear that one up. 'It's hard to work that up, you know. I mean I did it in The Stud, but I had to get so drunk! We all did,' she says. 'There was an orgy scene and Oliver Tobias, Sue Lloyd, Mark Burns and I got really plastered beforehand.
EXCLUSIVE'We'll get drunk no matter what': Boozy British tourists cause havoc in Magaluf as drunken brawls and bad behaviour are the norm in notorious party town - and despite Spanish authorities' desperate attempts to ban it, they say they will never stop
EXCLUSIVE: Boozy British ravers have stuck two fingers up at the Mallorcan authorities who are desperately trying to clamp down on binge drinking and all-night benders in the party town of Magaluf. After 10,000 locals marched through Palma, telling tourists to 'go home', the government of the Balearic Islands introduced a slew of restrictions in a bold attempt to stop alcohol and drug-fuelled partying. However, when MailOnline visited Magaluf this week, Brits cackled with laughter at the thought they would stop bingeing because of the new rules and said the Spanish government should just 'f*** off' and they were going to 'get p***ed' no matter what.
BRITAIN GOES TO THE POLLS
EXCLUSIVEBlow for Starmer as poll finds majority of public oppose lowering the voting age to 16 - in damning verdict on Labour's flagship policy
Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to grant 16 and 17-year-olds the vote, saying people old enough to work and pay tax should be allowed to 'have a say'. But the policy is 'strongly' or 'somewhat' opposed by 52 per cent of voters with just 38 per cent supporting it, according to the research shared exclusively with the Mail. More than half (57 per cent) of 18 to 24-year-olds back the proposal to lower the voting age, compared to only one in five over-65s. While the polling is damning on one of Labour's flagship policies, overall it gives Sir Keir a comfortable 24-point lead - up one on last week.
EXCLUSIVEFootage of French police standing by while migrants head to Britain proves Keir Starmer's plan to stop small boats won't work
The Daily Mail observed how officers from the French Police Nationale did nothing to prevent migrants catching a 'taxi boat' to Dover. The troubling scenes on Gravelines beach, near Calais, highlighted shortcomings in Sir Keir Starmer's proposals to seek closer co-operation with France and other European countries. Labour has pledged to tackle the migrant crisis by pursuing 'new agreements with France and other countries on returns and family reunion' and 'deeper security co-operation with Europe'. It has also proposed creating a new 'Border Security Command' - which Tory ministers say already exists.
How I breached Wembley's £5m 'ring of steel' to get into the Champions League final WITHOUT a ticket: Mail Sport's shocking expose reveals just how easy it is - and raises serious security questions
AADAM PATEL AT WEMBLEY: It was the hottest ticket in town. The face value of an official Uefa Champions League final ticket last weekend ranged from £60 to £610 but online and on the black market, they were selling for thousands of pounds. A quick scroll through Live Football Tickets - a popular secondary ticket website - in the hours before kick-off showed a going rate of around £4,000 and these were for upper-tier seats. Some of the lower-tier seats were selling for close to £10,000. Throughout the day in central London, I met numerous fans who had paid four figure sums for a ticket. With thousands of Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid supporters in town, the threat of ticketless fans trying to get into the stadium was a genuine concern and as such, the FA announced in the days leading up to the clash that they had taken relevant extra security measures in the hope of avoiding the scenes that marred the Euro 2020 final when 2,000 ticketless fans gained entry into Wembley.

Since the end of hostilities Eric Bateman has rarely spoken about the terrible events of June 1944 and his part in the historic D-Day landings in Normandy. But his family have given an insight into the bravery that inspired Eric to stand up in Portsmouth today and remember the fallen heroes of the Allied invasion of Europe 80 years ago. 'Eric was in the Home Guard as a teenager and he was determined to do his bit for King and Country as soon as he was old enough,' his daughter-in-law Sylvia Bateman told MailOnline.

Eighty years ago, almost 160,000 British, US and Canadian forces embarked on the largest amphibious invasion in history. On June 6, Allied troops crossed the English Channel by boat, aircraft and glider to attack and secure beaches in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord, with the end goal of liberating Nazi-occupied Europe and defeating Adolf Hitler's German regime. Supreme Commander General Dwight D Eisenhower, in charge of the extraordinary offensive, looked at the cards he had been dealt and decided to go all in. What happened next has gone down in history as D-Day...

BRITAIN GOES TO THE POLLS
QUENTIN LETTS: When I asked the old lentil-munching Corbyn about his blue suede shoes, he sang like Elvis
QUENTIN LETTS: What a change in Jeremy Corbyn. Finally free of the Labour Party, the man who nearly became prime minister in 2017 yesterday submitted his election-candidacy papers at Islington town hall. A hundred or so supporters gathered while this mysterious process was completed. Heaven knows what it entailed but at midday, with the air of a man who had just had his undercarriage given a spit and polish by the district nurse, a beaming Mr Corbyn, 75, emerged. There he stood on its neo-classical steps, proudly holding a large piece of paper saying 'Jeremy Corbyn, Independent', which is how he will contest the Islington North seat. In 2019 he had a majority of 26,000. Now that he has been manoeuvred out of his old party by Sir Keir 'Agreement With Me Is Compulsory' Starmer, Mr Corbyn aims to increase that majority as a lone groover. In one week of campaigning he said his team had already leafletted every house in the constituency.
