Evan E. Worthing High School is a historic secondary school located in Houston’s southeast area.  Its founder, Evan Edward Worthing, believed that every individual, including all African-American children should have access to quality education.  Therefore, in his last will and testament Mr. Worthing entrusted African-Americans as the prime and sole beneficiaries of his wealth, which led to the opening of Worthing High School on January 27, 1958. 

Allen E. Norton served as Worthing’s first principal until 1978 and the campus since then has continued to undergo continuous development.  Worthing High School is currently situated at the corner of Scott Street and Reed Road in a recently renovated building.  The original Worthing Junior-Senior campus remains intact on Bellfort Boulevard in what is presently home to Crispus Attucks Middle School.  Worthing High School serves students in grades 9 through 12 and is part of the Houston Independent School District.  As of 2016, the study body at Worthing High School is comprised of 86% African-American, 13% Hispanic, and the remaining percentage representative of other racial and ethnic groups.  Additionally, 95% of the student body enrolled at Worthing is economically disadvantaged.   

The list of distinguished Worthing graduates is widespread, but notable alumni include Senator Rodney Ellis, Terry Ellis (founding member of R&B group En Vogue), Legendary NFL player and coach Mike Singletary, and community activist Quanell X.
