While the Season 3 finale of Good Girls may not be its intended finish, the twisty hour laid groundwork for the ladies’ future in some major ways. Beth finally carves her own path in the counterfeit con, while Phoebe Donnegan’s hunch gets her closer to the women than ever before. How did it all wrap up? Let’s recap the season’s closing caper! (And make sure to go here to hear showrunner Jenna Bans and EP Bill Krebs break it all down.)
Agent Donnegan hits the salon to get her nails done by (who else?) Ruby, who checks a $10 bill in the light. She then details the tricks of how to tell if cash is real, which pretty much confirms Donnegan’s suspicions. When Ruby gets up to make some change, she leaves her purse out in the open…
Dean and Beth make Gayle an offer to buy the pool and spa store. She’s surprised, dumbfounded even, but Dean has clearly done his homework. Beth lowkey lets Gayle know that she knows, and then gives her two options. The first, Gayle can bow out discreetly. The other is pretty much the same “…only we would be less discreet and your family would just hate you for the rest of your life,” she adds.
When Ruby can’t find her phone (which, of course, Donnegan swiped), Annie suggests she check her pocket. “You think I didn’t check my pocket?” If looks could kill! Retta’s reaction is perfect, and the Ruby/Annie back-and-forths have really delivered some of this season’s best comedy.
When Beth delivers money to Rio, he asks how her system is going. Beth tells him that hot tubs are sort of like mattresses; brands aren’t apples to apples, so prices can vary, which means her books can say anything. Rio then tells her that she’s going to wash everything on her end. “But my system is just for me,” she says. There’s a business term for that, he says. Synergy! He still plans on reaping most of the profits and giving her just a tiny cut, so Beth really has no option: She’s gotta off this guy, ASAP!
Stan is pissed that their savings is gone, because he worked many shady side-hustles to pony up that scratch. “What do you want from me?” Ruby asks. “I want you to be the woman that I married!” Eeek! Stan wants to be paid back and he’s dead serious.
When Ruby suggests robbing Stan’s club, Beth tells her that couples therapy might be a better idea than grand larceny, because stealing from an armored truck is an insane idea. With limited options, they move forward with the club heist anyway. Ruby swipes a few of the club’s money bags, while Beth and Annie do some recon, watching Stan swap bags with truck’s driver. Meanwhile, Beth helps her son perfect a science experiment that will come in handy later.
The day of the job, Ruby weaponizes her cooking to distract Stan. She tells him she’s going to pay him back every cent. That and a little bit of slow-cooked pot roast seem to break down his walls. When the armored car pulls up, Beth distracts the driver, while Annie slips behind them with decoy bags filled with fake cash. Stan feels something’s up, so he goes out to check. When he opens a bag, we see a little ball of foil tucked inside — the science experiment. When the truck pulls away, the foil lights on fire, destroying the “money” before anyone can detect it’s fake.
Beth tries to get Gayle to sign the sale agreement, but the boss lady alludes that Dean didn’t tell her the whole story. She also sniffs out that Dean’s fooled around before. “I’m not the first, am I?” she asks. “Should I hold on to this?” motioning toward the check Beth just handed her. “I’ll take that,” Beth says, snatching it back.
Stan gets home and asks what Ruby did with the money. Just like that, Stan is paid back… only he sees it as her stealing from him to pay him back. These two are continually at each other’s throats.
Beth asks Dean if he ever would’ve slept with Gayle. His answer: “Probably.” Beth thanks him for his honesty, but Dean could’ve done without the lusty description of the woman’s assets. Being married on Good Girls is a tough gig. I think everyone on this show needs some counseling.
Rio’s guy comes for a pickup and Beth asks him how they stole her furniture. The next day, she shows up to the hot tub joint and the place is completely cleared out, allowing her to make a low-ball offer. After all, it’s just an empty showroom now.
Stan gives Ruby one last chance to accept the ring he bought her as a peace offering. “I don’t know where we’re going, I just want to go there together,” he tells her. At least one of this show’s marriages seems to be salvaged.
When Beth gives Rio a walk-through of the new operation, she asks him, “When does it get to be mine?” His response: “Next time, empty the clip.” Next time, maybe she will.
The ladies close out the season by celebrating at the park with some brown-bagged bubbles. Agent Donnegan jogs over, pretending to recognize Ruby from the salon. She asks what they’re celebrating, and the women uncomfortably dodge the question.
Now it’s your turn! Was this a fitting end, considering the circumstances? Grade the finale and season below, then drop some comments!
Is there any chance they get Alison Tolman back on the show if Emergence doesn’t get renewed?
I want Emergence renewed, I like her in that show way better. It is a great show.
i used to love the show, was not a fan of this season as much as 1,2. I honestly would not watch if there was no Brio. I love Stan and Ruby on good terms, and I want to see Annie and Greg back together on some level. As far as Dean and Beth, Tigers don’t loose their stripes and its hard to love and or respect a weak man. The show is fighting a loosing battle trying to make him comparable to Rio, but i do enjoy the great dad angle.
I was hoping for a finale that showed another failed or successful attempt at getting rid of Rio. I liked the resolve between Stan and Ruby. I wanted Annie to at least get her GED but maybe still have some instability about what to do with her life. I liked the therapy angle. I wanted to see the investigation be halted and restarted next season instead…otherwise, I am a fan will keep watching..please don’t give up on Good Girls!!
It was NOT Excellent!🙄
THIS^^^^ Thank goodness this season IS OVER!😴
As with other shows cut short, I think this was a good place to leave off. Looks like Beth and Rio may have to work together. Would like to see more character development for Rio if there is a season 4. He plays this role well but the scenes are too repetitive. We need more substance from the writers. Season 4 please!
My daughter got me to binge watch on Netflix because she knew I LOVED Rio actor in Lucifer and Stan actor from Mike&Molly!! Rio and Stan make this show for me!! I hate all the dumb decisions these women make but then Rio wouldn’t be able to teach these naive wannabees street knowledge!! Wow the 80s rap reminds me of my street/military FUN TIMES!!! HAHA Nelly took me back to da lou!! So develop more Brio..hahaha Now back to binging…
I love everything about this show. I hope they get to keep going. I love the ending. Keep up the good work!!!!!!
I love this show. Beth and Rio have a lot of chemistry. Please let the series continue.
I hated that The Asian girl was killed. I didn’t feel like last episode was really the real season finale, but I figure that’s just shortened productions due to pandemic. I really enjoy the show and cast. Hope there’s a season 4.
Really great show, too short of a season. Beth and Rio are great when they don’t hate each other. Liked the last scene with them in the bubbles building. Look forward to a long next season.
This show used to be great. This season was lackluster at its best and nonsensical at its worst. I hate to say it because I still consider it a guilty pleasure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t renewed.
Meh. Could have less foreshadowing of failure and doom. Why are so many characters just ignorant? I really want to like this show but if the next season starts like this finale, I might look for something else. Cliffhangers are cheap network schlok.
Rio had an innocent young girl murdered. KILL HIM.
This show is going downhill so fast…
I agree to some extent. The Rio character is very interesting, but at some point, he should face some sort of justice. I thought perhaps it might be useful for him to be eliminated by Mr. Fitzpatrick (McCarthy) and then to have the latter become the new foil…i.e., he would start to force the girls to do business for him.
I do enjoy the Rio/Beth relationship, but perhaps a new angle is needed to keep things fresh. Of course, I suppose the destiny of the show might be for Beth’s husband to eventually triumph over the villain Rio given some of the foreshadowing on that count. Who knows, we shall see, as they say…
I hope this show is renewed for season 4 so it can redeem itself. I still don’t understand why Beth keeps Dean around.
Out of all the shows I’ve seen cut short, this one really felt like an abrupt ending. Annie was barely in the episode.
Bring the show back for Season 4….PLEASE!!! My husband and I LOVE this show!
What happened to Mary Pat and Broomer ?
I hope that if the show is not renewed for a full season it can at least have a one hour wrap up episode. That was not a satisfying finale!
Hated season 3..makes no sense…very dark…need to pep it up in season 4 and make rio a thug with a good side ..with a heart. and needs to forgive beth. Also hope he did not kill the two people…too dark. I think rio is working with the police and staged seargents death and trying to get beth but in the end rio win save her somehow.
Idk if im the only one but part of why I watch this show is for RIO. I feel like Rio and Beth werent as close as they were other seasons tbh, I love together sm. And y’all keep mentioning Rio’s death. I’m aware at the end of this Rio probably will be dead, but please keep him alive for as long as you can. He’s my favorite charcter.
