Larry Page And Sergey Brin; The Duo That Created Google

Share

Larry Page and Sergey Brin were two computer science students at Stanford University, looking for a way to make searching online easier.

They created what we now know as Google, an internet search engine that revolutionized how people access information online. Here is how their story goes:

LARRY AND SERGEY GROWING UP

Larry Page and Sergey Brin were born in the same city in the same year.

They were born less than a year apart. Larry Page was born on September 12, 1973, in Lansing, Michigan, and Sergey Brin was born on October 28, 1971, in Moscow.

Larry Page grew up in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he attended Purdue University. He later transferred to Stanford University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in computer science. While at Stanford, Larry Page worked for the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL).

Sergey Brin grew up in Moscow but moved to the United States when he was 18. He attended M.I.T., receiving a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science in 1985.

After graduating from M.I.T., Sergey Brin attended Stanford University, where he received his master’s degree in computer science in 1986 and his doctoral degree in computer science in 1990 (all degrees are from Stanford University).

THEY MET AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY AND CREATED A SEARCH ENGINE.

Larry and Sergey met at Stanford University, where they were both computer science students. They were both looking for a way to make searching for information online more accessible.

After spending time together, Larry and Sergey realized they had something in common: their love of technology and desire to create something new and unique.

Larry had been reading about how the Internet was changing people’s lives by making it possible for them to find anything they wanted through simple searches on Google or its competitors like Yahoo!, Bing, or AOL (which later became part of Time Warner).

In 1999 he decided it was time for him to take action by starting his own company, Google’s search engine, which would allow users worldwide access to this power!

THEIR FIRST OFFICE WAS A GARAGE.

The first office of the Googleplex was a converted garage. This is where Larry and Sergey started their company in 1998, working out of a converted garage inside an office building across from Stanford University.

The location for this project was Menlo Park, California—a town just outside Palo Alto where many tech companies have set up shop over the years (including Apple).

The neighborhood has been called “Silicon Valley” since its birth in the 1950s, when it was home to several major computer companies, including Lockheed Martin Corporation and Hewlett-Packard Company.

It is worth mentioning that Larry Page himself grew up here! He graduated from nearby Stanford University before graduating at M.I.T.

He landed his first job as an intern researcher at Xerox PARC under Seymour Crayton. This inventor created supercomputers like Cray XC-20, which helped kickstart today’s digital era!

They called their creation ‘BackRub.’

Larry Page and Sergey Brin were looking for a way to measure the importance of websites. They wanted to rank them based on their personal preferences, but they wanted only some information from one source (such as Alexa).

So instead of using multiple websites or services like Alexa, they looked at how many other sites linked to your site.

This concept inspired backRub—it means “a link from one website to another.”

They got the name google from Wikipedia.

Google is a play on the word googol, a mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes. The name was inspired by the misspelling of “googol” in Martin Gardner’s book “Mathematical Magic.”

The founders were inspired by Wikipedia, which they found to be very useful in researching information about their new company.

THE FIRST GOOGLE DOODLE WAS THE BURNING MAN FESTIVAL SYMBOL.

The first Google doodle was a flaming man festival symbol. Sergey Brin’s girlfriend designed it, and the character is used because they were at the Burning Man festival when they came up with the idea.

GOOGLE OFFERED TO SELL FOR $1 MILLION TO EXCITE.

Excite, a well-known search engine company had been trying to buy Google for some time. Their offer was $1 million, and they were willing to pay in cash.

Google refused the offer because they did not want any part of Excite. Excite then made another offer: $10 million in cash.

Again, Google refused and said they would only sell for $1 million. This continued for several weeks until a deal was made with Excite’s chief competitor, Microsoft.

Microsoft offered to buy Google for $1 million, but this time Google accepted the offer and sold their company to Microsoft for $750 million in 1995.

IN 2000, GOOGLE WENT IPO.

In 2000, Google went IPO. This means they are now a public company with shares traded on the stock market.

The first time Google’s stock was offered for sale was in 2004, which was priced at $85 per share. It was then sold to investors for $100 per share, giving them an overall gain of more than 10% on their investment (the equivalent of about $1 billion today).

This IPO is still one of history’s most successful IPOs ever; it raised over $1 billion in just two days!

IT BECAME A PUBLIC COMPANY IN 2004 ON NASDAQ.

Google Inc., the search giant with a market cap of $1 trillion, went public in 2004. At the time, it was the second-largest IPO in history—and went up more than 1,000% since then.

To get from there to here, Larry Page and Sergey Brin had to overcome obstacles like competing with their own university professor’s invention (the first website), getting fired from their jobs at Stanford University because they were working on “a mysterious project” (which ended up being Google), hiring someone else to write its code so they could focus on product development instead of web design…

GOOGLE IS USED BY MORE THAN 90% OF INTERNET USERS TODAY.

Google is used by more than 90% of internet users today. It has a market share of over 90% and is the most popular search engine in the world.

THE ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM WAS RELEASED IN 2008 AND HAS BEEN THE LEADING MOBILE OPERATING SYSTEM EVER SINCE.

Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google. It is available on smartphones, tablet computers, smartwatches, vehicles, televisions, and other electronic devices.

Android was released in 2008 as an open-source product; you can use it without paying for it (for example, if you want to modify your phone). This has been a massive success for Google because they keep all their profits while users benefit from free software.

Challenges the founders faced when working on Google Google were founded in 1998, but the company has faced many challenges.

The first challenge that Google faced was competition from Microsoft and Yahoo. In 2000, Google had to compete with the search engine Yahoo! because Jerry Yang’s Yahoo.com company owned them.

This resulted in Google investing in its search engine, which caused them to spend more money than expected and hurt its financial status for a few years.

In 2003, Microsoft agreed with Google to use their online advertising system AdWords for search and display ads. This gave Microsoft an advantage over Google because it allowed them access to more data about how people search and what they are looking for when they search through their computers or mobile devices.

In 2005, Google faced another problem when it launched Gmail, competing against Outlook’s email service Hotmail. This led to tension between Google and Microsoft because they felt that Gmail’s free email service would hurt their business model, where users paid for services like email and maps.

CONCLUSION

So, that is it! Google is one of the biggest companies on the planet, and they owe its success to two guys who started their company in their garage. When you hear about all the cool things at Google, remember this story and be humbled by what these two geniuses created!
