All piano classes are 11 weeks per semester; sections will be determined upon placement. Students may join in either fall or spring; however, spring placements are contingent on midyear vacancies. Fall semester classes begin the week of September 26.

Piano

  • EVDIV 141 - Fundamentals of Piano


    Eric Martin
    This beginner course provides a comfortable and comprehensive introduction to playing the piano. It is suitable for those who have never played before or for those who want to revisit the instrument and improve their skills. The course is designed to help students enjoy the joy of playing the piano.

    Weekly classes will be held in a group keyboard lab setting, with individual attention given to each student’s needs. No prior experience in reading music is required, as the course will focus on developing technical and relaxed approaches to playing repertoire with both hands in just a few short lessons.

    Students will learn a diverse range of repertoire from popular, jazz, and classical genres, and will have the opportunity to explore improvisation to enhance their creativity.

    Playing the piano is a highly rewarding experience, and this course is perfect for anyone who wants to start their musical journey or improve their existing skills. Application is not required for this introductory course.

  • EVDIV 143 - Jazz Piano


    Art Williford
    These courses are designed to develop the skills and aesthetics required of jazz pianists. Students are placed into classes according to their ability and musical goals, ensuring an appropriately challenging curriculum for working music professionals and hobbyists of all levels. Beginning students learn to read chord symbols, create solo piano arrangements from a lead sheet, and “comp” in trio settings. Intermediate and advanced students complete transcription projects, refine their improvisational skills, and learn more complex chord voicings. Two sessions with a rhythm section comprising Juilliard Jazz musicians give all students an invaluable and enjoyable opportunity to practice what they have learned. This course is intended for proficient pianists who can read music (both treble and bass clef) and are familiar with musical fundamentals including major and minor scales, triads, key signatures, note values, etc. Students may join in either fall or spring; however, spring placements are contingent on midyear vacancies.​ Placement application required.

  • EVDIV 241 - Piano Class


    Matthew Odell, Mika Sasaki, Assaff Weisman, Lisa Yui, Patrick Kreeger, Art Williford
    In this class, students explore classical piano technique, style, interpretation, memorization, and performance practice in a master-class group setting. Each section of this class is limited to four students. Active listening, discussion, and attention are critical elements of group piano classes. Informal performances are given throughout the semester, and department-wide seminars featuring guest experts and master teachers round out the learning experience. Students are placed according to playing ability and potential to contribute to and enhance a positive group learning dynamic  Prerequisites: a basic knowledge of rhythmic values (i.e. whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, etc.) and the ability to sight-read at the piano in both treble and bass clefs with both hands playing together. Students may join in either fall or spring; however, spring placements are contingent on midyear vacancies. Placement application required for new students.

  • EVDIV 445 - Chamber Music


    Art Williford, Mika Sasaki
    This class is for advanced pianists who seek to work on chamber music literature. Classes are limited to four students who play alongside Juilliard College Division student musicians and study under the guidance of a faculty coach. Ensemble combinations vary according to the repertoire, including duos and trios. In addition to weekly coachings, students rehearse with Juilliard musicians outside of class. Each semester culminates with an in-class performance, open to invited guests. Practice room privileges included. Students may join in either fall or spring; however, spring placements are contingent on midyear vacancies. Placement application required for new students.

    All Chamber Music classes are 11 weeks per semester; sections will be determined upon placement. Spring semester classes will begin the week of February 4.
