Longmeadow High School Reviews
Rating 3.93 out of 5 194 reviews
As a full time student at Longmeadow High School, I have adopted a feeling of community and a sense of pride concerning my town and school. I am especially grateful to go to a school that has such a tight-knit community. As a student of both the arts and music department, I have been able to foster my creative talent in a way that I would not have been able to without the teachers I have worked with. I have felt welcomed by staff and students in ways that have changed my life. But, as a white student, I have experienced privileges at LHS that non-white students do not have. Though I can say that the staff at Longmeadow High School seem to work hard to advocate against discrimination and racism, not all students feel this way. Even I can see the racism that other students endure from peers. I hope that there can be more of an effort to discourage discrimination and provide a tighter sense of community for students of color, and for Jewish and Muslim students as well.
I moved from a different country and settled in Longmeadow to go to school there for my Junior year and Senior year. I had a great transition into the environment, very well welcomed and despite my language barrier, the first few months I received the appropriate assistance. My senior year went well, and the school prepared me appropriately for college. I liked the school and from my time there, our students are extremely engaged in the sports.
Overall excellent teaching, and many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities. The AP curriculum is inflexible and geared toward the AP test. It does not reward deviations from the defined curriculum that might interest the student. Students are prepared to successfully matriculate in any college setting. If a student is extremely bright, a good test taker, and has exceptional leadership skills demonstrated outside of school, they might stand out on any college application. Unfortunately, admission to the most elite colleges often requires more that this. Guidance counselor connections can determine whether a student will be noticed when they apply to Ivy League or similarly competitive schools; LHS does not have a track record of recent success. If a student is driven to attain this goal, then a prep school setting with the advantage of guidance counselors who have an inside track to many of these institutions would better serve this type of high achiever.
